Navistar also conveniently leaves out the detail that their .5g NOx "Advanced EGR" engines don't meet the .2g NOx standard without using emissions credits.

John Mies, VP of corporate communitcations at Mack/Volvo:

"The fact is that a Mack or Volvo truck running at 0.2 grams (per brake hp/hr NOx) is and will continue to be much better for the environment than a Navistar truck running at 0.5 grams – and no amount of changes to the inducement strategies will change that,” he said. “Let’s make sure that what we do is truly in the interest of the environment and the public. And let’s not penalize those who have worked with you in good faith, and reward those who are trying to manipulate the system for their own competitive advantage.”

Navistars dirty little secret.....they will be going to urea in the near future. It may be a solid form of urea though.

Audi of America has confirmed plans to add diesel engine choices to most vehicles Audi sells in USA over the next couple of model years. There will be diesel versions of the A3, A4, Q5, Q7 and A8. The Q5 with a V6 turbodiesel would be a snappy performer.

For 2012, Audi offers diesel engines in two models, the compact A3 (2.0L turbo four cylinder diesel), and the large SUV Q7 (3.0L turbo V6).

Sales of diesel powered cars are up 38% compared to last year. Best seller is the VW Jetta. That's the good news. The bad news is that diesel represents less than 1% of total car sales (we're talking cars, not trucks).

Hybrid gas/electric cars sell three times as many units than diesel cars. No wonder auto makers are focusing on gas/electric models. What we need is for VW to make a diesel/electric hybrid that gets much better mpg than the Prius. That might swing attention back to diesel as an economical alternative.

Details here. Scroll down to see the diesel figures.

We just bought a FIAT 500 and it's getting 34 mpg around town, 31.5 driven with sprit.

But they have a new 1.3L turbodiesel that gets 60 mpg.

I'll take one of those.

We drove a new BMW Mini Cooper Diesel last weekend. This car is so much fun, it's unbelievable.

I averaged 40 mpg, and that with cruising all the way from Paris to Mont-St-Michel at 150 km/h with the a/c on.
Extremely impressive.

more diesel Cruze rumors

http://green.autoblog.com/2011/08/16/gm-targeting-50-mpg-with-diesel-chevrolet-cruze/

Unnamed sources leak details on the new Chevy Cruze diesel. Automotive News reports
-- 50mpg or more is the target highway mpg
-- the engine will be based on the 2.0L turbodiesel found in the Australian Cruze sedan
-- the diesel engine will make the USA Cruze faster as well as more economical than the 43 mpg gas powered Cruze
-- the diesel powered Cruze will appear in 2013. I'm betting on summer 2013, as a 2014 model.

Hypermilers Helen and John Taylor just completed a trip around USA, driving at least 20 miles in each of the lower 48 states. Using their special driving techniques, the Taylors coaxed an average of 64.42 mpg out of their stock 2012 Chevrolet Cruze Eco sedan during the 9400 mile trip.
http://www.wired.com/autopia/2011/08/aussie-hypermilers-set-mileage-record/

That's an impressive result, but not as good as the Taylors achieved on a similar trip in 2009, driving a VW Jetta turbodiesel. On that run, the average was 67.9 mpg.

Achieving high fuel economy is nothing new for the Taylors. In 2008, the Taylors drove a stock Peugeot HDI 110 turbodiesel sedan 9000 miles around the circumference of Australia, averaging 75.6 mpg.http://green.autoblog.com/2008/05/2...rive-peugeot-308-around-australia-at-75-6mpg/ Earlier in 2008, the couple drove 2.0L turbo-diesel 4WD Jeep Compass and Patriot models from London to Poland, traveling more than 650 miles on a single tank of fuel. That's about 56 mpg in the Jeep SUVs.

Edmunds Inside Line has a comparison of hybrid sedans from Toyota and Honda. In real-world commuting, both hybrids returned about 38 mpg. That's good, but far lower than their EPA estimate for combined driving.
http://www.insideline.com/toyota/pr...a-civic-hybrid-vs-2011-toyota-prius-five.html

In contrast, the VW Jetta diesel tends to produce mpg that's better than the EPA's estimate of 34 mpg for combined driving. Just goes to show how difficult it is to create a test process that mirrors real-world results, and how today's test cycle still discriminates against diesel powered vehicles.

So Chip, what are the chances of the 1.3L diesel FIAT 500 here?
I'd get it just to commute and leave the PW home for weekend duty.

Autoblog has a hands-on report about the new Mazda CX-5, a small sport utility that will appear in early 2012 as a 2013 model. The CX-5 is a replacement for the mazda Tribute. It's based on the Ford Kuga platform, which will be used by the new Ford Escape as well.

The report includes details about improvements to Mazda's 2.2L turbodiesel, now producing 310 ft-lbs of torque, revving to 5000 rpm, and expected to return close to 40 mpg. Since the engine meets current USA diesel standards without a lot of expensive exhaust scrubbing, there's a chance we could find a diesel at a Mazda dealership next year.

Interesting that the gas engine has a very high 14:1 compression ratio, and the diesel has a relatively low 14:1 ratio.

That 2.2L diesel sounds engaging, and I'm most impressed about the possibility of no exhaust after-treatment!
