The diesel is the best option you can buy. It's wonderful in the deep sand.
Can't wait to get the new CRD with 200 horses and 460 newtonmeters between 1.600 and 2.600 revs when combined with the 5 gear automatic. With manual tranny 410 newtonmeters between 2.000 and 3.200 revs. Both options may are combined with a start / stop system.

In your state in the USA, maybe diesel is $4.03 - that's not the case in most countries. It's usually quite heavily subsidized and is cheaper than gas (for e.g. in Ecuador gas was $1.50/Liter and diesel was $1.03.
Here is Canada it's usually right around the same price.

I don't know how much more the diesel costs than the gasser in other countries, but I've heard that the new 3.0VM coming to North America in the Grand Cherokee gets 34mpg in the GC - a nice improvement.

I feel like most people will look at a diesel jeep and try to make the economic point and see how long or how many miles it takes to pay for itself but for me and I'm guessing a lot of people on this site want a diesel for the extra range it would give the jk. Carrying a ton of extra fuel means more weight which weighs down these weak v6s and causes even worse mpgs. I'll never have a hemi for the simple fact they get the same or worse mpgs than our horrible engine. Plus let's be honest torque is cool.

In countries like Austria diesels are much better of when bought new because our extreme, sickening tax system make them cheaper. Last years the diesel and gas price where almost the same, but the milage is so much better. Going frequently to the Sahara the milage advantage and the save storage of diesel inside the car helps a lot. I had over 200 liter on the longest stint to the Wau an Namus crater in the passenger compartment.
The much better torque is more helpful in the dunes than anything else. In 5 weeks I needed the low speed only when recovering other vehicles. Of couse it's no fun to have technical problems with a diesel away from home, which I never had. I wouln't want to keep a heavy used diesel Rubicon longer than 5 - 6 years, this might become cost intensive. On our trip we had a partner with a 15 years old diesel Cherokee. He was 9 times in north-, and west-Africa discovering only minor problems. It all depends how rough or easy a car gets used.

Guess it going to depend on what diesel they are putting in them. If you cant add 10mpg and keep the cost very close to gas then the economics just dont work. Most of the US buyers are gong to look at MPG before torque or range.

I signed it, but I imagine a diesel JK Unlimited would approach the $40k mark rather quickly. I'm just not in that market right now. But with newer clean-diesel engine technology, ultra-low sulphur fuels, and the increasing acceptance of fuels containing biodiesel, diesel makes sense for the US market--both economically and environmentally. A diesel-powered Jeep brand Wrangler-type vehicle would indeed be the bee's knees. For the last few years, Jeep has continued to float the diesel-power idea in tandem with Wrangler/truck-platform concepts: the J8 Sarge, Gladiator, and Nukizer M715, for example. Testing the waters, teasing the buyers, or priming the public? Hopefully, we will find out soon.
