Even a 2021 XL at $40k is a lot nicer than a 2001 XLT…I know because I have both.

Seems like most of the upgrades done to the truck were basically done because the truck is old and used - take those away and you are basically left with suspension, an air compressor, a bumper and a winch.

Of course, as you said everything is back ordered so if you want it now you will pay a premium. But at this price I’d rather buy a ************ class C and drive that around for a bit while I waited for everything I ordered to get ready

I totally agree here. At least a few people on this forum (@montypower comes to mind) have basically done just this. Bought 2020 F350 XL 6.2L gassers for 40k, thrown 25kish in upgrades at them and had a way nicer version of what you see in this thread.

2001 F350 4X4 is $35k
Brand new Granby Camper base price is under $21k
??
I've never seen a 2001 7.3 fetch $35K with 240K.
I had a brand new 7.3 F350 in 2002... It was far from legendary...lol.
The Cummins/Dodge shop I use performs routine maintenance on them. Everything else goes to a garage that specializes and cleans up wrenching on them. I had some performance stuff put on my 98.5 24v at Banks and remember the tech asking if he could work on my Cummins. There's a rack used that enables the mechanic to lay down in order to extract the turbo and that's an old one.

Let's go ahead and get a better spec F350 for $50k, which boosts to $100k total. Could you pay someone to do the upgrades for $32k?

2021 F350 STX is a nicer truck than a 2001 XLT ever was. For under 50k you can get a super crew, STX, 6.7, 4x4. You can save about 9k if you get the 7.3 gasser... which will probably outperform a 250k 7.3 diesel.

Also... I can definitely get the upgrades for less than 32k...lol.

I'd bet they're tired of working on it. Yeah, the stock motor MIGHT go 500k, but not after you've stuck a snazzier turbo in it and a tuner to fool it into letting you exceed the max boost level deemed safe by the manufacturer. Of course, it's still stuck in a light truck chassis that's getting into the "more and more" work to maintain stage. I've been there, I've done that and I got tired of working on that crap too.

Hey all, my wife and I are the jerks who owns this piece and are trying to sell it. I want to start off by apologizing to everyone for my lack of education in the subject of off-grid camping rigs and what it seems appeared to be me trying to rip people off with a crazy over-priced rig. I won’t try to argue if you think it is over priced and further I might be a total idiot but I did in fact spend $128k on this thing. We sold our house last year and live in this rig full-time so as I was building it I was able to convince myself (and my wife, sorry about it!!) to drop some stacks since this was our new home. Now our financial circumstances have been impacted and we are just trying to get some of our money back out of this build so that we can get into a more affordable “home”.

To clear the air on the cost of the camper, it is not a base model slide in Grandby. This is the fully-loaded flatbed Grandby which cost us $55k and on top of that the norweld tray cost us $13k. So yes, that’s a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a camper and flatbed but there is $68k of the build right there without even getting into the cost of the truck or any of the work done to the truck.

We spent $15k buying the truck and the following is the list of stuff that we did or paid someone to do to the truck:
* 17x9 Pro Comp 97 steel wheels
* 35x12.5 BFG A/T K02 tires with ~5k miles on them
* Front u-joints
* Sky manufacturing high steer crossover kit
* Icon 2.5 shocks
* Custom track bar mount relocation
* Redhead steering gear box
* Front wheel bearings
* Inner axle seals
* 4.56 gearing
* Corsa muffler
* S&B Intake
* ARB air lockers front and rear
* ARB twin air compressor
* Custom welded on rock sliders
* Custom rear tire swing out with NATO fuel can holders
* Custom add-a-leafs made by Atlas Suspension to support the additional weight added from the camper, bumpers, etc.
* Trasharoo
* ARB Deluxe front bumper
* Hi-lift jack mounted to bumper
* Warn 12k winch with synthetic rope and Factor 55 flatlink
* Baja Designs LP9 driving lights
* Smittybilt defender rack with custom wind fairing
* Touch screen navigation head unit
* Rearview camera and custom mount on the rear storage rack
* Dash cam
* Edge CTS-3 monitoring system with every possible monitoring option
* Hydra tuner
* F650 dash
* 2008+ mirror upgrade with heated mirror switch installed in the rocker panel
* Water pump mounted to frame to easily transfer water from the Norweld tray 10gal water tank to the main tank in the camper
* Sound deadening added to the entirety of the cab (floor, rear wall of cab, and ceiling)
* Rear seat delete with storage options and the possibility to easily add more layers of storage
* Rear window net storage
* Brand new truck batteries installed on 5/31/2021
* Dynatrac ball joints (NOT YET INSTALLED)
* Differential fluid change front and rear

This entire list of stuff cost us $45k (I tallied up EVERYTHING so this value may be slightly inflated due to including costs of recovery gear and such) and I understand that if we could have performed all of the labor ourselves that we could have done it all for a lot cheaper but the reality is that we didn’t have those skillsets so a portion of that cost was sunk into paying others to do the work.
I don’t know if you all have experienced this on your own builds but the truck I originally intended to build was going to be much cheaper and not anything like what you see today but I got the bug and got carried away. So while it might have been a better idea to build this setup on a brand new F350 that’s just not what happened.

I personally have had a great experience with the 7.3L so far and actually haven’t had to do much at all in the way of maintenance other than oil changes since owning the truck. Basically all of the work listed above was done to make the truck better suited for the camper, not to fix anything that was broken. This is my first 7.3L and the first diesel I have ever owned so once again I am not as educated as you all here, but I had heard these were good trucks and good motors and my personal experience has seemed to reflect that.

All in all I would like to apologize again; I was never trying to screw anyone over by selling this thing at a high price but based on all the positive feedback we receive on the build when we take it out (we literally can’t stop anywhere without talking to someone about it), as well as the current market for these things (we all know the market is crazy right now but that’s out of my hands) I thought people would really be interested. I see now that is not the case, however I hope you all can understand my side now and see that I’m just trying save my current financial situation. I personally think that this rig is pretty sweet and super dialed in, and to the right person I think they would be willing to pay my asking price and I think they would be getting something really amazing for them, not getting ripped off.

Either way I am not here to change your minds just here to tell my side of the story now that my Expedition Portal account has been approved. I do sincerely appreciate getting some education from you all on the value of full-size popup camper builds since you all have been doing this stuff for so much longer than me and understand the market and value much better than I do. I also hope to be in something that is still “Expedition Portal worthy” after this truck sells (if it even sells) and would like to continue to be a part of this community if I haven’t already totally blown it! Thanks if you took the time to read this wordy message and I look forward to learning and growing more with this community!

Hello Sir and welcome to the forum. You are not the problem here and should not apologize no matter how much you are asking for your rig. I have been around this forum since it's inception and can tell you that it has went downhill with some of the members here.

Unfortunately the members who are posting rude replies on how overpriced your rig is, have no intention of purchasing it. Anyone who is here to shame you into lowering the price into a low ball figure should take their comments to a PM or other form of communication.

I am following the new and used vehicle market as well as electronic, steel, wood, and other manufacturing. Your asking price is right in line to the market value. RV's, trailers, campers and trucks new and used are very hot items right now and it's a sellers market. This is going to change in the upcoming months/years. We just don't no when.

Well built rigs such as yours that sold for a lot less in the used market a few years back are commanding a premium price right now and a lot of sellers are getting more for a used rig than when it was new. Please take some of those posts claiming the "low ball value" of your rig with a grain of salt. I would remain firm with your asking price to lowest cost you have in mind to sell it for.

I had a coworker a few years back who paid almost 90,000.00 for a Ford F350 pretty loaded. It's what the market was. That same truck now is well north of 100,000.00 new at the dealer. Take a look at the teardrop market. High quality off road teardrops were less than 20K just 2 years ago. Those same ones are going for 30k - 40k+ today. And as mentioned from other members some of them have a 1 year or more lead time. How do you think the quality of those slammed together rigs are going to be?

Thanks for the support and perspective on the matter! It is certainly a crazy market right now and I guess now that I think about it similar to when we sold our house for $100k more than we bought it for and $50k over our asking price. No one was being forced to spend that money but they were certainly willing to!

You are very welcome Sir. Your rig looks to be a fantastic buy for someone looking for a turn key solution to get out there for some off grid adventure.

BTW the 7.3 IDI ford diesel is arguably the most reliable engine ever put into a truck. I have seen these engines take a beating in fleet trucks and get over 1,000,000 miles with nothing more than oil/fuel filter changes, fuel pump tune ups and a few injector replacements.

The market is distorted compared to historical norms right now. It's always been more or less accepted that you can't get back out the cost for modifications to your truck compared to stock used. Usually the recommendation was to remove the mods you could to sell individually. Today that may not be quite as true, I dunno for sure. Depends on the mods I suppose and anything overland® seems to flip a switch in the market.

I'm one of the people who thinks it's priced high but I never was in the market for something in this price bracket. However I do honestly think it's a pretty cool truck. I don't subscribe to the "But the 2021 is nicer" train of thought. I hate new trucks and what's called "nice" to me is just more crap to break. So older is desirable to me, no question.

So ask what you think it's worth and only you can determine if you're getting enough offers in a timely way. Maybe you are in fact getting tire kickers at your asking price and if it works out then you can know the market has shifted. As they say, good luck with the sale.

Thanks for the well wishes on the sale and honest opinion on the truck and price! I also totally agree with sticking with older vehicles. I always have and always will too!

We actually really love our truck and are now going to consider selling just the camper setup and keeping the truck with a cheaper, hardside camper cause full-time living in the popup is doable but hasn’t always been fun!

This is a thread about a Craig's List add. Had it been a for sale by member, even a member who joined the day of the add to sell their truck, there would be no comments about the price.
Good luck with the sale.

Thanks Joe! Ya I was intending to get on here to post it for sale as well but it took longer to get my account approved than I had thought.

Well said. The gatekeeping elitists in here are an inevitable part of enthusiast forums. But even after all of these years, I still cringe when I see it happening.
