Downey Off Road???

I was trying to reach Downey yesterday and the phone rang and rang. I tried again this morning, and it is Disconnected. I have a manual hub conversion that was sold by Off Road Solutions, now out of business. I broke an outer CV joint a few months ago and used my spare. To replace the spare, I got one from Downey in February. Now with them out of business, I don't know where to source them.

I just called Downeys regular and fax #'s and both were out of service.

Their website doesn't say anything about being out of business though.

If they are out of business....that completely sucks. :(

Just got this from Downey.....

Downey Off Road Mfg. ceased operation on July 31, 2009.
There are ongoing negotiations with six different well known companies who are interested in continuing major portions of the Downey product line. You will no doubt find Downey products at one or more of those companies in the near future. We thank your for being a part of our 39 year history.

Wow, shocking to hear. When I bought my first Cruiser in 1995, Downey was all the game and offered some truly innovative products. I've done business with them many times over the years. A true loss to the Land Cruiser community.

As I mentioned before, I have a 2003 Tundra with the ORS manual hub conversion kit, which uses the splined outer CV axle stub from a 1996 Toyota Tacoma with manual hubs. ORS went out of business in December 2008, and I found Downey sold the same part, just $46 or so, plus shipping. Downey went out of business 7/31/09 and I was kicking myself for not handling this in March when I broke my left front axle and had to install my spare.

Well, the off road community is a tight knit group, indeed. Everyone I called was truly helpful. Here is a tree of how I got to the right company for my part...

Tried Northwest Offroad, per a suggestion here. They had never dealt with this system, so it was unfortunately a dead end.

Called my buddy Sean (DevinSixtySeven). He suggested Kartek.

Kartek suggested I try All Pro or Demello.

Demello suggested I try Total Chaos, Inchworm or Marlin Crawler.

Nicole at Total Chaos was very helpful. They were suffering from not being able to do manual hub conversions since ORS went out of business. She suggested a local fab shop that makes one-offs, Summers Brothers.

I called Jim at Inchworm and he was aware of a place, CV Unlimited in the east somewhere. They are in South Carolina. I spoke to a technician there, Larry. He knew exactly which part number I needed off the top of his head, and set me up with Oren in their sales department to take my order.

They sell them two to a pack for $110 plus $12 shipping to Houston, so I will have a spare. They go out today and Oren said to call him back tomorrow for a tracking number. GREAT customer service so far!

I sure hope it is the right part. If it is not, I can return them and get a full refund, minus shipping.

I'll keep you posted.

Downey is done? Wow! :Wow1:
When I first got into Toyotas back in the early 90's it was Downey or Northwest Off Road for aftermarket, they were the main sources of all the cool parts. They will be missed.
