Droverrover buys an fj80???!!!

I'm on my 3rd FZJ80, and close to 10 Toyota trucks over the past 35 years... My father sold Land Rover when I was a kids, so I rebelled and went Land Cruiser. Land Rover is still my mistress, but I am definitely married to Land Cruiser

I can certainly offer lots of free advise on 80s, but its all dependent on budget.

As your truck sits now....

  • Sliders for sure those running boards will get ripped off 300 yards down the first class 4 you hit this spring.
  • My favorite are Hanna, but pretty unobtainable these days. Second would be fabricated by Rodney. 3rd BIO. 4th Slee (have 2 sets now)
  • IMO rear bumper is very discretionary. Sure it gets spare out from under, but check out Slee's interior mounting option before you drop 2K on rear bumper. Plus I HATE having to swing it open incessantly when camping.
  • Winch and some sort of sturdy bumper is needed. May not need full bull bar, buy you do live up in livestock land. I am partial to TJM T13s, but also like Slee and BIO fabrications
  • Castor/Camber and sway bar drop for sure. I run 36" TSLs and with'm (and a good alignment) it handles like a car.
  • Extra 12v in rear cargo area is nice
  • Rear Aussie locker is pretty short money (400ish). Plus easy to install when you are re-gearing down to at least 4:88 if not 5.27, yes will need to do that. I wish I had gone to 5.27 with my central american LC 80, would help (more than 4:88s) on the big hills and 1500# of cargo....
  • Pin 7 mod is nice too, as is dash CDL if your truck doesn't haz
  • Iron Pig has a very nice center skid plate for 80s, its like .70 T1 steel. You can hi-center all weekend long and never stress a tranny mount.
  • Shaving off the fender flares in the privacy of your own garage may be a prudent exercise, is better than doing in the woods with trees....I learned the hard way.
  • Titanium valve stem caps are pretty cool too ;)
  • Do not let it over heat, the HG are the weakest link, but that should already be second nature from your LR v8 experiences right?

Happi Motoring!

Hey, long time no hear! Since VOT I think?
Thanks for the suggestions, I've already ordered sliders from bumpit off-road, I'm ordering the slee shortbus this week. And as far as rear bumper? I'm still hung up on that one. I agree with you , the swing outs are a pain in the *ss to get into the rear tailgate. If I order a bumper , it will be just a bumper. No swing outs. I've dealt with that in the past, and I can deal with it, but I'm sure my wife will not. I bought this truck under the ruse of it being hers. ;-) so I'm trying to be considerate of that , until the time she bores of it , and I can do a 6" lift and 37"s! Lol

My plan is to buy a solid bumper that I'm happy with, and when the time comes, I can fab on the spindles and add tire carrier and ladder later.

As far as head gaskets, yes, being a rover owner I'm already paranoid about that, and it's on my radar.

That's easy. Sell that other hunk-o-junk, buy an LX or GX470, she will readily give up the 80, and you'll both be happy.

Couple of interior mods.
There's no f'n cup holders!!
So..... What would any rover guy do?

Got a D2 cup holder from rovers north , and then I ordered the matching interior paint from cruiserparts, and sprayed it to match.
While I was on the phone with cruiserparts, I also ordered the factory correct cup holder for the blank spot in the dash.

Seems bumper talk is germane - why do people favor dual swing outs? To be honest swing outs are a bit of a PITA but I understand the necessity. Why not go with a single swing arm to minimize effort? That's the way I built my 4Runner bumper. I spoke to Sean about doing a single swing out and will either go that direction or modify a 4x4 Labs bumper in the same way. Just curious why 80's all have duals.

Had I realized what a PITA a dual swingout was going to be I would have gotten a single. But then I wouldn't have anywhere to put my jerry cans with extra fuel for my trips to the mall.

Yes VOT. Didn't make it to NEORW, same weekend as Yankee Toy[ota]s Fall Gathering, hard to draw me away from 4 days of wheeling Land Cruiser People. Oh, and you REALLY need to join the club, despite having a snarky rep, it is a Land Rover friendly group ;)

You cannot go wrong with BIO or Slee gear. If you do go 6" might also want to consider long travel dampers and longer brake lines. I am stalking the Radflo website a few times a week, but need to sell a lot more coffee before I can throw down. Hope to see you out on the trials with YT this season.

My 80 has a single swingout, it works good, Im using a Poison Spyder one original meant for a 37' tire on a JK, that i modified, but with ALLLLLLLLLLLL the stuff the DroverII is gonna have in it, any swingout will get in the way.

If I didn't have OEM dual tanks, I'd remove my rear carrier and put back under. I'm temped to remove the second tank do it, and probably would, if facebook, Expo, IH8MUD didn't exist....

i was unaware 80's had a dual tank option in the US. id love to find a second tank for my lx470, fuel slurping hog that it is.

Dual tank was dealer installed in '94 when original owner bought it in NorCal, no way would I have installed. The OEM system is a bit odd, secondary tank is pumped to primary tank, not dual fuel pumps like most US systems. The truck has very interesting history. Was purchased new in '94 and was outfitted by Toyota dealer for Sanfran to Argentina 12 month trip. However, owners got to Costa Rica and stayed for 6 years. Truck then traveled to France and North Aftrica for a few years, back to US/Boston, now back in Costa Rica. Only things I've added are tint, bigger tires, 4" lift, surf board, and A LOT of PM. If truck was in US it would motovate me to remove and sell off the secondary tank. On a beach truck, the swing-a-way tire mount is a PITA

They did not, guessing REDrum installed it or it's a non-US vintage. Plenty of options for the US folk though, Long Range and Front Runner. Fwiw I'm really loving the added 16 gallons on my 100 Series: http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...000-UZJ100-Land-Cruiser?p=1514988#post1514988

This long range fuel tank inquiry is interesting, since I've been trying to work a deal with a fellow portal member for this

It's the long ranger I believe, 45gal aux. he seems to have everything including an oem split filler neck. Does anyone have any experience with this particular brand? Is this a major PITA to install? Any insight would be helpful.
