I prefer social distancing.
Maybe DM PathNotTaken and ask how they did it? I think they’re in WA. I would also try OR, NV and SD. I spend a few months in OR every year so that’s where my truck and van are registered.
I believe PNT did say in his videos he did have some DMV issues, but was able to work through it.

My understanding is that if I buy a cutaway, CA DMV considers this an incomplete vehicle which cannot be immediately registered. You must have some sort of "certified" upfitter do the conversion and provide you with the appropriate documentation to certify it is safe and roadworthy.
If I buy an off the shelf box truck I can register immediately and then have it UJOR'd and do my DIY interior without any further lengthy dealings with the DMV.
Once I have completed my RV conversion, you go back to DMV and they change from commercial to recreation registration.
I could be wrong, but kinda think this is how it works.

In California, to avoid commercial vehicle registration, you need a homecar exemption. They then register it as a auto. BUT! The DMV will climb into the habitat and look for cooking and sleeping equipment to validate the homecar exemption application.

This is my challenge, since I'm 90% done, and must wait to go to the DMV when done.

Thanks for that info.
Can you please post a pic of what you’re building?

This is what Tennessee is telling me as well. Kind of surprising given how lax Tennessee is when it comes to vehicles. You can ride a side-by-side on the roads here.

I'm wondering if I can't simply generate the appropriate documentation myself.

I spoke with some people in PA yesterday and it seems there are some hoops to jump through to have it converted from incomplete to a complete title but not impossible. I just need to document the build, including pics and receipts. Then take it to an inspection station where they will certify it as safe. Then submit paper to the state.

At my local U-Haul, 14ft box, V-10. Right now they want $3500, think maybe the engine is gone.

If it sits another month, I'm gonna offer $2500.

Perfect candidate for a 7.3 Godzilla / 10r140 swap.

I’d look it over closely. The last UHaul I drove was a few months old and only had 17,000 miles on the Odometer. I hated it so much. It was loud, gutless, handled terribly, and was loud. If UHaul is selling it cheap, expect everything will need to be done.

I’d take my 1997 ambulance over a brand new UHaul any day of the week.

And personally I’d not want a rig that gets 7-10 mpg on a good day.

Our last trip through the Rockies we got 13 mpg (us). And once we made to Calgary we got 16 mpg (us)

My current plan is to buy a new ford e350 10' wabash box with the Godzilla. Hope to stay under 9K pounds, and roll on 35s. I would be happy with 10MPG.
