Where are you planning on camping, in the area of Fortuna Mine Rd.?

Al, I am considering the eastern flanks of the Gila Mtns. just east of Telegraph pass. This would be fairly close to Wellton for the start of the trail on Friday morning.

Do you have some basic coordinates for that location?
I may just opt for camping rather than hotel...save the dinero...

Ed, it would be fun to have some company! Here is a marker that is roughly the area I am thinking of, on Topozone

Great plan, Chris!

I thought that looked like a possibility as I was scanning my own maps.

A question, though. The map doesn't look right. It shows I-8 as only a single lane at Telegraph Pass, yet it actually is split, and each double lane winds through the mountains there, actually crossing over one another at one or two places.

It also shows the dirt road leading off directly from the highway, yet I don't recall any such roads that access interstate highways except at interchanges.

How are you planning to get there?

Ed, I agree with what you said. I think we would probably have to exit at Wellton and backtrack towards the hills. We can just kind of play it by ear. Based on this though, we might need to skip the dinner in Yuma so we can use daylight to find a good campsite. What do you think?

Brian, the more the merrier. Did you decide if Oliver will be joining you?

Oh, yeah...I'll skip a city dinner for a camping dinner any day!
If I read my topos right, I'll have to bail at Wellton. The trick appears to be getting over the CAP canals.
Any thoughts on that?

Aha! I see part of the problem with the maps. The Ligurta quadrangle is 1965 data...before the Interstate. So the road shown is actually US 80. The other quadrangles are 1980 or better.

Should be fun!

Yessir - el topo data es muy viejo. It looked to me like there was a bridge over the canal adjacent to the freeway. If you look at Google Earth, there are some bridges that cross the canal. (wait, you are using a Mac, right? Can you look at Google Earth?)

Oliver is still undecided.
I want to bring him but also want to play it safe and limit the number of potential liabilities in such a remote area. I would imagine that most of the stinging and biting critters are dormant this time of year but it sure would suck for him to stick his nose wher it don't belong and get hurt way out there.

Call me a paranoid parent but I
still have to think on it some more!

Hey, no sweat. I agree. Do what you think is best. I imagine it will be warm enough during the day for some reptiles to be out and about. And the scorpions will likely be around too, be sure to check the underside of your ground cloth before you pack it away in the morning ;)

Yes, I can Google Earth...very cool. I'll lookie-see.

As for critters, I just removed a rattlesnake from my yard this past weekend.
They are definitely out, confused, and a bit cranky....

OK, so last night I had insomnia and Google-Earth'd the possible route to the Thursday campsite...or at least close. The satellite images go "low res" just about at the Gila Mountains.

It looks like there are a lot of new dirt roads in the area that most certainly will not show up on the topos of the area.

Here's what I came up with as a possible simple route from Wellton exit almost out to the camp:

Exit I-8 at: 32 39’ 43.01” N, 114 08’ 32.61” W
S to: 32 37’ 12.32” N, 114 08’ 31.43” W
W to: 32 37’ 11.64” N, 114 12’ 37.68” W
N to: 32 37’ 44.49” N. 114 12’ 35.33” W
W to: 32 37’ 44.70” N, 114 13’ 39.40” W
N to: 32 38’ 04.31” N, 114 13’ 39.35” W
W to: 32 38’ 03.93” N, 114 16’ 29.27” W
S to: 32 37’ 37.77” N, 114 16’ 29.89” W

What do you think?
Should we rendezvous somewhere near there or will you be out early enough to set up a camp and we catch up? I'll be leaving Tucson around 1:30 - 2 PM...should be able to be there by around 5:30 PM.

Ed, I will probably be arriving around 5pm at the earliest, so maybe it will be best just to meet up near the highway to avoid confusion. I can't seem to enter your coords into Google Earth. When I create a placemark and edit the coords, they won't "stick". Sorry.
