Saw Paul at the Off Road Show in Pomona. A couple of pictures below. The crowds were big. The Overland section looked great.

Hey David,

Just back from the Off-Road Expo. Trying to catch up.

The aux tank actually has a very thick bottom on it. Thicker than the rest of the walls. Considering the abuse I gave it, I think it held up pretty darn well.

The net on the fridge enclosure was an item I picked up at the Abentuer Allrad show in Germany in June of 2010. There was a guy there selling them. He has all sorts of nets like this one. He gets them as end of run inventory for different car manufacturers. Mercedes, Volvo, BMW, etc. Left over stock from a finished production run. Then he sells them at shows. I would suggest looking at the back of different vehicle front seats and finding one you like. Then source from there. Long answer for a short question.

The water heater was in the range of $700, if I remember correctly. Mario or Martyn could dial that in for you.

Cheers,

Thanks for the information. I already have a few dents in mine and thought you might have a good solution. Good to know you didn't get a rupture or leak.

Front Runner Auxiliary Fuel Tank

As promised, here are some photos of the auxiliary fuel tank we put in the truck. It is a 170 Liter tank, which comes out to about 45 gallons. Add that to the main tank of 27 gallons, and that give us a total range of 72. SLC to LA on a fill up.

The top of the tank is contoured to the space available up under the rear of the truck when the spare is removed.

All the lines to the main tank are replaced with flexible line. Breather lines are in there, and a line that runs from the pivoting draw point on the bottom to a fuel pump to an inlet that pours the fuel into the top of the main tank filler line.

You will see that it fits up in there pretty well, and with the tapered bottom it actually sits up tighter than the spare tire did.

There isn't a gauge system on this tank. It's a matter of memory, I guess. The general rule of thumb I use is that I can fill the main tank from the empty light on to just over 3/4 tank twice while driving. It's a low pressure pump, but as long as it flows faster than I use it up it's all good.

Cheers,

Just stopped in at Paul's house today to look over his rig- most impressive! And a super nice and helpful guy. While I'm still looking for a 100 to start modding, Paul's is definitely what I'd like mine to look like some day- completely outfitted with all the best stuff!

Front Runner Wind Cheetah Slimline Roof Rack

I thought I would share the latest configuration on the roof rack. I was documenting some new products when I realized I hadn't said much about this on the thread. So here we go.

This is the Front Runner Wind Cheetah Slimline Roof Rack System for the Land Cruiser 100 Series. There's a lot I like about this rack. It's very light, as under 70 pounds. It is very strong. I've had 8 guys standing on it before. It's very streamlined, at 2" tall. But what I like about it the most is that it is extremely versatile.

The floor of the rack is a series of "T" slot extrusions that hold 8mm hex headed bolts. So you can add, move and remove just about anything you like to it. The set up in the photo is my event set up. It shows a great deal of what is possible. Here's what is on there.

Eezi-Awn Series 2000 2.5M awning
Front Runner Accessories
- Stainless Steel Table, mounted underneath
- Dual Can Holder
- Single Can Holder
- Bike Mount
- Shovel Mount
- Axe Mount
- Hi Lift Mount
Alu-Box Pro Case, storing a Eezi-Awn Rec Vee Panel Set for the Awning

The Hi Lift mount is designed for use on the side of the rack. I made a couple simple flat plates to span several slats, the mounted the Hi Lift mount to them. Quickly turning it in to a rack top alternative.

I can have all of these items off and a roof top tent mounted back on in about a half hour.

Cheers,

Paul, any update on the propane holder? Last time we spoke, you said you no longer carried them because FR had switched to a size only available in SA.

Nothing on the propane bottle mount yet. I haven't heard of an expected timeframe either. I am going to install one of the propane bottle mounts that Adventure Trailers produces. A very nice aluminum mount. It's waiting in my garage as we speak. I'll drill a couple holes in the bottom to match up to the rack, and bolt it right in place.

Cheers,

The Wind Sock Mod

Last month, straight from the SEMA show where we had the 100 on exhibit out in front of the Convention Center, we decided to go on an overnight adventure around the north side of the Grand Canyon and stay out at the Toroweep overlook campground. It was Mario from AT, Ray from OJ, Jess from Eezi-Awn, Muchi from Action Camper. We were having a great time. On the way out towards Fredonia AZ, we had a bit of an issue.

I was cruising down the dirt road at about 50 mph when I heard a horrific BANG! I quite honestly sounded like a cannon went off in the truck. I checked if I was bleeding. Nope. Windshield in tact. Yep. So I pulled over to see if there was damage to the truck some how. It didn't take long to find the issue. The entire back window of the truck was shattered. A sheet of pea sized glass. We think it was rock that deflected off the trailer. Not really sure.

So, we needed to cover up the hole. Muchi had picked up an orange wind sock from the road some ways back. We cut it open and duck taped it around the rear hatch. It worked great! No cold air ingress, no chattering at speed. Other than looking like a street barricade it was a great temporary fix.

2011-11-06-13.22.59.jpg

We made it into Prescott that night. The next day we found a body shop that had a roll of collision sheeting. It is a clear material that body shops use to secure vehicle windows after an accident. Imaging a 3' wide roll of packaging tape. We had them put that on, and I drove from Prescott to Tucson and back, then up to Salt Lake City. No problems.

I had the rear hatch repainted, and the window replaced. Good as new. The only thing I am really missing is my "Dog is my Co Pirate" sticker. Loved that sticker.

Cheers,
