Really enjoy following your build. This will be quite the ride when it is all done.

Agreed. Seems like a large unit though, maybe no room on/around dash?

I will let my associate Rich field this one he is the radio guru...
It is a strange place....I would love to get some ideas from people on a better place to mount it.

However, given the mass, mass, size, and weight of the unit .... and considering all of the other electronic gizmos I have that are important for me to have in my view, it seemed like a good location.

(Size of approximately 8” Wide by 11” Deep by 2.5” high plus the height of the mounting bracket which is another 1.5” or so.)
(Weight is approximately 5lbs with the mount)

I do have a remote SWR & Power Metering system for it which was important to me and the only thing I really need to monitor on a regular basis. This meter will typically show me if there is a fault in my system preventing me from blowing something up.

Bear in mind, that once I choose a channel, it is a set it and forget it type of thing. I did not feel the need to have it “in my face so to speak”. It is out of my way where it is PLUS it is very securely mounted and ready for off-road abuse....I mean use....:)

The radio is 80 Watts Output and drives a “kicker” that provides a total of 500 Watts output. I am not sure how far it will go under ideal conditions. My guess would be 10 to 20 miles worse case scenario in a congested area and 60 to 80 miles best case scenario and ideal conditions such as over water or open land. Could be more or less but that would be my best guess. This does not factor in “skip” which can allow you to transmit over a greater distance due to very specific atmospheric conditions.

Yes, Nat does very nice, through, detailed work...:)

The 1996 Lexus LX-450 is 6,800lbs

The 1997 Lexus LX-450 weighs about 7,600lbs

These are weights as verified on a Certified CAT Truck Scale.

Great work. Almost as heavy as my truck. Congratulations.

Yep, getting close! I'm at 7995 lbs empty in the 100. That does include RTT, drawers, fridge, Aux tank.

Great work.

Cheers,

Rich,

Nice to see you sign in and post up. I love this thread. I can't wait to see either one of these trucks in person.

I should be down that way sometime soon....will be visiting Frankie at FOR within the next 30 to 60 days. That would be a good time to meet up...:)

That sounds like a plan. Frankie is only about a two and a half hour drive from me. Keep me updated and I hope to make it happen.

Could you mount it vertically to the back of the center console? I think access would be about the same as you have now, and it would be more solid and out of the way. Unless, of course, rear center seat legroom is an issue.

Actually, access may be better, as you could just reach back with your right hand, rather than turning your body around as you reach across with your left.

When you consider access, don't just think about how often you change channels. You will probably want to have fairly easy access to volume and squelch.

looked at placing the unit there but it was a little to big for that area and the CB's aluminum heat sink was right over the rear heater vent

Also got the wagongear.com tail gate storage door in and installed

I dyno matted and carpeted the whole tail gate to protect the sheet metal and quiet it down a little

Looks awesome Nat!

Two questions if I may:

Where/how are you installing the Yellowbox? I followed the writeup on the MUD homepage (http://www.ih8mud.com/product_reviews/fzj80-yellowbox.php) and installed mine behind the glovebox, but I suspect it is interfering with the cruise control holding a steady speed. I'd be interested to hear if you are doing something different.

What type of carpet and adhesive did you use inside the tailgate? It looks great.

Cheers!
