Exploration and Fly Fishing in Eastern Arizona

Cramped sleeping quarters?

You get absolutely no sympathy from me after sleeping(waiting for night to be over) in the back of that damn J8!

Chevelon is a great place....I know some similarly beautiful spots towards Clifton, and on the NM side near Reserve.

There is no lovelier fish than the trout. It matters not one whit how large or small, they are all beautiful. We need a flycasting emoticon here.

I was wondering if rainbows were native to Arizona or not, thanks for satisfying my curiousity. Native species here in PA are brookies and some browns, though they are getting scarcer these days. The Fish Commission has a serious stocking program for browns and rainbows (and the occassional palimino for the kids) and though they were once not of the highest quality these stockers are now much better fish in terms of the quality of flavor and behaviour do to changes in the way the trout are being raised in the last few years. But even with the changes, give me a nice little stream flowing through a hemlock hollow filled with native brookies and I'm a happy man.

when does the trout season run in AZ? I'm going to be in UT and AZ for my honeymoon the first few weeks of November and the Mrs. and I would love to find a spot like that.

Haggis, the AZ native trout are the Apache or Golden Trout and the Gila Trout. The Apache Trout is found only in AZ. If you are a lover of trout and cold water fisheries, you should find a copy of Trout and Salmon of North America by Robert Behnke. It is a wonderful book.

Brings back memories of a trip to East Clear Creek 7 or 8 years ago. Thank you.

My wife taught school in Holbrook when we were dating. The dining choices are indeed slim, but Romo's Restaurant was decent. It is just west of the intersection of Hopi & Navajo.

Scott - as usual, great trip report. Good to see you put the long rod to use and hooking into some fish! Chevelon has some big browns, fall is a prime time to get into them.

To answer some questions above. Apache and Gila trout are the only trout native to AZ. Golden Trout are not native to AZ and none are found in AZ. There is no 'trout season' in AZ. Fishing is open all year, however some places have special restrictions such as Silver Creek and waters on the Apache/San Carlos reservation.

This is very familiar. My family's ranch encompasses most of Hay Hollow and much of the Silver Creek drainage. The cows you saw probably belonged to my uncle, and the fences were likely put up by my grandfather. I spent a big part of my childhood in this area.

I never thought of the area around our ranch as an overlanding tourist destination, as I didn't think many people would recognize how beautiful it is.

There are a number of Indian ruins in the area as well, with rock art and lots of pottery shards if you know where to look. One sad thing is that the run off from the huge pig farms outside of Snowflake have really polluted Silver Creek. When I was a kid, the water was pure and clear. Now, it's got a lot more algae and scum and nastiness in the creek. You joked about the weight limit of the bridge. The previous bridge collapsed under the weight of a truck (back in the 50's I think.)

Here is the map of our first segment, from Holbrook to Saint John
