Ah, indeed, some nodes aren't open, and are restricted to club use only, but they should be identified as such on the listing.

I made contact with the local ham club, but did not really take to that scene.

Keep in mind there are often many different radio clubs in an area, One may be into contesting, one into experimentation, one for emergency communications, one (or often more) for repeaters, one for DX, etc. The "general purpose" radio has kind of gone away in favor or task specific activities.

Check out some of the other club and find one that fits.

The repeater system for 2m is a fun tool for sure. I was able to key into a known-linked repearter located on a mt-top on the Oregon Coast when i was up at MT.ST.Helens visitor center in Washington...I then got into the I-5 corridor repeater system and talked to a fellow up in B.C. Canada like we were standing next to each other. All this from a 5 watt handheld in a parking lot.

Now that is the kind of connection I'd like to make...

To use a repeater with an IRLP node:

1. Identify a local repeater on the IRLP list, and a node you'd like to contact.

So who all can access an ILRP Node?

From the link Mark posted, there are a few 2m nodes we can hit from Tucson (3033, 3892, a couple more). It doesn't seem like there's one easily accessible from Flagstaff, but Prescott has one listed.
There's a 2m node listed for the Grand Canyon (3735), 30 miles away; Can you Flagstaff guys hit that one? Maybe from the Snowbowl parking lot?

It doesn't matter what band we're on, as long as we're hitting the same node, right? So if some of us wanted to be on 70cm and others on 2m? Can multiple stations access a node at the same time?

I definitely want to try this out. We ought to pick a node and meet time for our net.

Some harder-core-Hams-than-I also participate in DXpeditions where you try and get QSOs from really far away. I've always thought it'd be interesting to reverse that concept and I go way out and see many contacts I can make.

It would be much more interesting to say, ``Good Evening net, this is K***** from Monument Valley'' instead of sitting in my driveway doing the same.

I agree! That was one of the draws for me to get my Ham License....to get out in the boonies and make contacts...
I'm learning right now and have yet to get my rig & radio out on a good trip.

so what about setting up a weekly day & time (or maybe 2x week until we get it figured out) and we just start trying the node thing until we start getting contacts...I would be up for friday evening or sat am or sunday afternoon type times that way we can get some radio practice time and talk offroading and expo stuff...down the road we can even setup weekly topics for our nets
just a thought or two

If the node is "open", it's available to all users.

The Grand Canyon node is actually on Bill William's Mt. - I can hit it with 5W from Chino Valley, 25W from Prescott, AZ if I have clean line of site. It should be easily reached from Flag.

As far as the cross band thing goes, I don't know why it wouldn't work.

If the noded is a reflector, multiple users can acsess it. I've never had the opportunity to use a reflector - my local 2M node doesn't permit the use of reflectors.

If you are trying to open a node already in use, it won't work. (if you were trying to open the node in Williams and it was already being used, it generates an error message on your local node)

On the other hand, I've used a local node that was in use - I was able to transmit to the Bill William's node and speak with the user of the open node in Phx with no problem. (kinda confusing - once the link was established, I could use it until it was closed)

Ok I am really up for trying this out...
Just to get the ball rolling...my data
KE7NKP Phoenix AZ Tech
Yaesu VX6R handheld able to use 2m(140's) and 70cm (440's)
Free on Sunday afternoon at 3pm to experiment

I did a little reading on irlp and winsystem.org (since many folks are in Socal)
maybe we could pick a repeater for each area that can reach a known reflector so we can try to meet up for a weekly net
Kinda of like an Overland Journal Airborne Edition :)

Anyone else free on Sunday afternoon to try this?
another forum I am on adventure4x4.net is looking at trying the same thing so us newbies can learn....one way or another I need to build my skills :)

What's the number of the local node you plan to hit?

I want to try too, but I can't do it this Sunday.

There was nothing on the radio more exciting than to be above Monument Valley in the mountains, while heading to a meeting place before a run. I gave a calling out, and in a few minutes actually getting a response from a person nearly 100 miles away, turns out, it was a fellow 80 owner on his way up to meet.

The power of ham and long line of sight...

I wouldn't mind trying either. Just would need instructions as to how to link up. Never done it before. Gonna be prepping for the next trip this weekend (heading out next week) so this weekend is off for us.
