Could I beg for a weekday thing? Unfotunately, more often than not, I'm not on a trip on the weekend but rather bespoke with work, a weekday would work much better.

Conversely, when I am out-there, it'd generally be more likely to be the weekend, so I understand. Additionally, it'd would be entertaining at least to hear the QTH of everyone.

Weekday evenings are good for me too.

how funny I picked weekend cuz I figured everyone would be more free then...
Of course weekday nights work good for me...how about monday evening?
That would give everyone a few days to figure out what repeater/node is close to them..
so far reading about irlp it looks like we would try to reach the Las Vegas Reflector (western)...
this is a first for me so after more reading tonight I will post more...
I think we should shoot for 8pm with a backup couple of repeaters to be tried at 30 min marks till someone chats with someone..
of course I will have my laptop with me to check here for more info/issues during the net
thanks for effort everyone

Ok I went through and looked at where everyone was at and bands..this in only the folks who expressed interest in trying to get this going..if you want to join in the fun just post up...

Here is the list, please help complete it:

name: Andrew Walcker KI6GRW
Location: Riverside
Freq: 2M 70cm

name: DatariEd KE7OEF
location: Tucson
Freq: 2m 70cm

name: \\'ander
location: Palm Springs
Freq:
has played on winsystem.org

name: SOCALFJ KI6LBB
location: Corona Hills
Freq: 2m
has hit repeaters in Sierra Peak/Catalina/Big Bear

name: crawler#976
location: chino valley az
Freq: 2m

name: BogusBlake KE7OLM
location: Tucson
Freq: 2m 70cm

name: 1leglance KE7NKP
location: Phoenix
Freq: 2m 70cm

name: pskhaat
location: Sonoran Desert
Freq:2m 70cm

So from this list we have folks spread way out but mainly on 2m..if you can use 70cm update that info as that might increase the aval. repeaters.
Also winsystem.org might be an option if most of the folks are AZ/CAL however I would like to figure out how to open this up global if possible...

If you want to learn more and see how it might work for you go to irlp.net and read a bit, then go to "node info". Here you can look at "connected nodes" and look at the western reflector, that will tell you if any repeater near you is already on the node. If not then go to "list of nodes" and see if there is anything near you and try to get that repeater to connect.
Again this is all new to me also so I will start tomorrow by trying to reach a tempe repeater that is already connected to the western reflector. Then I will try a repeater in chandler and try to get it connected on a channel that isn't in use already on the western reflector which is what I think we would need to have clean air to rag chew on.

In addition there is a LA reflector that we can try if the LV one is a no go.

All thoughts welcome.

We can all transmit on 2m or 70cm.

Add me...

Been a lurker here for a few months... Lance let me know about this thread.

Add me to the list Lance. I already listen to the WINSYSTEM but I'll try and pick you up Monday. Since we're dealing with different time zones and all, 8:00 pm there is 7:00 pm here. When annoucing times we need to make sure we are all on the same page. Is it 8pm PST or CST or? :)

I think they are talking about 8PM in UTC-07:00. So link up at 2007-08-13T03:00 Zulu (Sunday evening here in the US)?

Hey FJ-Ollie
glad to see you on here

The time to try this out will be MONDAY at 8pm Arizona, 7pm California

I got an email back from the owner of a tempe node that is his is open and we are welcome to play on it for learning purposes.
So I am going on a night run tonight and will take my radio to see about connection and playing a bit.
Everyone who is interested please go to irlp.net and look for a node near you and try to hit it. See if you can get on and listen/repsond....especially if it is a node that is already on the western reflector.
Of course I am still learning myself and at first it will be all I can do to get on the air and hear anyone else using this system.

I figure we will need to learn enough to open a unused channel on the reflector since we will have enough people to form a decent net and we will have pretty much a non-radio topic

as always all thoughts welcome and I will report my findings soon.

I just passed my Tech. liscense. So, I'll have to catch the chat on the next go-round. BTW just picked up a Yaesu 8800, looking forward to putting it all together. Enjoy

OK, after reading about how to operate the Western Reflector here http://www.irlp.net/, it looks like we need to coordinate our planned net with the owner of that reflector before we all just jump on there and start a QSO.

I think IRLP is way cool, too. But just so the new hams are aware, lots of people don't like it because it sort of defeats the purpose of ham radio. I mean it does not rely on long distance radio wave propagation to make long distance contacts, such as HF would. I think the idea is only expanding the idea of repeaters and not replacing true DX radio work, two separate concepts. But just wanted to make the point so that if for some reason you get an old timer or something, don't be surprised if they are not keen on the idea of IRLP and EchoLink. There are people who have been doing ham for decades and they are also ticked that a bunch of us got in without learning Morse Code (OMG are they upset at the dropping of the Element 1 requirements!) and we (to them) clog the VHF bands without jumping a high enough bar. They see IRLP as a band aid so that lots of No Code Techs could do DX without paying our just entry. Well poo-poo to them, eh? But still, be respectful and understand their position because I do think it has some validity. In a true emergency IRLP may be no more useful than a laptop or cell phone and it would be them who has the last laugh as they chat up the whole world with the only need is some local power.
