Finally! A GPS mount that doesn't suck!

I got my first GPS unit in 1999. It was a Lowrance unit that didn't even have a map display (I know, primitive, right?) But I loved the utility of the GPS and have had one ever since.
.
In 2011 I finally got with the modern era and got a true automotive style touch-screen GPS to augment (but not replace) the old hand-held Magellan unit I'd been using previously (and which I still use on the motorcycle - just because it's easier to see and easier to use.) The unit I got was a Garmin 255w and I picked it up off of CL for $50.
.
Initially, I used the standard suction-cup mount to the windshield, but then I quickly discovered the reality about using the suction cup: It sucks. And when I say "it sucks", of course, what I mean is that it DOESN'T suck, or, more accurately, that it stops sucking and causes the whole unit to fall into my lap or onto the floor at the most inopportune times (like driving down the highway at 60mph.) And if you've ever had that happen to you, you know how much it sucks.
.
At first I thought that maybe the problem was that sticking to windshield glass was not ideal because windshield glass rapidly changes temperature. So I got one of those round plastic discs you can stick to your dashboard and attach the suction cup to that. I think the idea is that the disc is smooth and made of plastic and the suction cup will hold onto it tighter. Here's a picture of that setup which I've been running on my 4runner for the past couple of years:

.
Here it is with the GPS mount on it (GPS removed so you can see it better.)

.

.
If any of you have tried this, you probably discovered (as I did) that this setup is only marginally better than the windshield and the GPS unit still has a nasty tendency to stop sucking and to fall into my lap while driving or onto the floor if the vehicle is parked. Which, again, sucks.
.
So, after putting up with this sucky situation long enough, I finally decided to suck it up and go back to the only solution I knew would work and that is to use the RAM ball mount. I had used this on my previous 4runner for the Magellan, and it worked well (although the heavy Magellan unit tended to make the top of the dash pucker up a bit.) I searched for a cradle on Amazon and found one for under $20 and ordered it.
.
I then took the RAM ball that I got with my first GPS unit in 1999...

.
Since I really don't like the idea of putting screws into foam and making permanent (damaging) changes to a vehicle I might one day want to sell, I got some 3M Double stick mounting tape (I love this stuff...)
.

.
...and cut it to fit the ball.

.
A quick "peel and stick" later and it was on...

.
Here's the finished result with the GPS on it:

.
Now there are some who might say that there is now an ugly RAM ball on the dash, and that kind of sucks. While I agree, I have to counter that having a GPS unit that falls into my lap sucks even more, and that the RAM ball is a relatively minor intrusion into my sight line. Also because I have a separate DD, the 4runner is really primarily my long distance travel/towing vehicle (for our little T@B Livia) and so under most normal circumstances, the GPS will be mounted.
.
As a bonus, I noticed that the previous suction cup mount would often allow the GPS unit to wobble around and it was difficult to adjust while driving (yeah, I know you're not supposed to  ) but this mount holds the GPS very tightly and it doesn't move around at all.
.
Two other good things about this mod: 1. it was cheap (I already had the ball mount and the arm, and the cradle, with the ball was $17) and that it is 100% reversible (best way to remove the double stick tape is to use a blow drier to heat it up and then carefully pry it up with a razor knife.) So if/when I sell or switch vehicles, the only cost to me is some time and a little bit of double stick tape.
.
Anyway, I just wanted to share my solution of how I got my GPS to stop sucking. :sombrero:

I've never used the suction cup mounts (combination of the problems you had plus warnings that the circle on the glass flagged the vehicle as having a GPS hidden in there (from back in the day when they were a popular theft item). I kind of like this one. Doesn't meet your budget but does have the added advantage of a power cord run to it so that you don't have the cord from the outlet up the dash to get tangled.

Pretty good at some stuff
I have been using custom fit mounts from Panavise for a number of years and across a number of vehicles. I've been exceptionally pleased with their product and how they both install and work.

On my MINI, my Murano, and my Silverado, the vehicle specific adaptor reused existing screws in the dash. On my Pathfinder, installation required tapping two new screws, but they're located on the side of a dash cubby, so even if I were to remove the mount, the holes would be invisible.

Here's the link to their website. (https://www.panavise.com/index.html...tat=1&--woSECTIONSdatarq=30&--SECTIONSword=ww) I've actually bought all of my mounts from them via Amazon, as that got me free shipping (gotta love Prime).

I just looked to see if they had a photo of the 4Runner mount and found their installation instructions (with photo). (https://www.panavise.com/pdf_indash/75137-303.pdf)

Very nice, I like that setup a lot, I may even copy it.

In my opinion, RAM is one of the best products ever made for it's purpose. I have an ever growing assortment of products from them, and it seems to stay useful even as my devices change. It started out with handheld GPS units, now I have a GoPro setup, not to mention an iPad mount option.

I may need new cradles from time to time, but all the mounting hardware stays the same.

Actually I have an ideal position for a similar setup to your in my rig, I have a removable tray that sits in that dash location I could hard mount to (I have no issue drilling holes, I already have extensive customization done to the interior.)

What annoys me is there does not seem to be a specific RAM cradle for my flavor of Nuvi. Garmin made an oddball attachment on the device side, so I'd need a generic cradle.

Are you sure? I thought the same thing but I was quickly able to figure out which one would fit and it fits fine. I assume that Garmin has probably only used 5 or 6 different "frames" to put their GPS units in and I'm sure there is probably a RAM cradle for yours. Now if it was some off-brand, maybe not but Garmin? There's got to be one. What model is your Garmin?

A Nuvi 65LM

I figured whatever mount needed to fit in that round fixture. Now you have me curious. I will say the 65 series is a newer line with 6" screens without the fancy features of the 2XXX models.

Actually I'm just being lazy. I could design and 3D print an adapter if I put the time into it. Or make an Aluminum 1" ball to whatever size ball fits in that socket.

Wow that's odd that RAM makes so many mounts but not that one, but I think you're right. Maybe it's because the ball mount is built into the back?

If you can remove it by heating with a blow dryer what about it falling over from high dash temps on a hot summer day?

Uh, no. You have to heat it with a blow drier (which softens the tape somewhat) AND pry it up with a knife. Heat alone won't remove it, it just makes it easier to come off.
.
I use the heavy duty indoor/outdoor mounting tape which I think is rated for up to 5lbs per linear inch. Given that the GPS weighs less than half a pound and there are about 2 1/2 linear inches of tape on there, I think I'm good.
.
I had this exact arrangement on my 99 4runner with a much heavier Magellan Meridian GPS and never had an issue even on hot days, so I'm not worried.

RAM mounts are nice, particularly because they are easily adjusted to different angles and easily moved between vehicles.
Also, when you change devices the majority of the mount components can be used again.

ProClip also makes some nice non-suction mounts but they aren't quite so easily adjusted or moved between vehicles.

Those pro-clip mounts would also put the GPS way below my line of sight. I like having the GPS on the dash where I can see it without taking my eyes off the road.

I've used RAM, suction, and Proclip mounts...RAM is definitely the winner if you can figure out a way to mount it to the vehicle. I'm currently using a REALLY good iPhone suction mount from Bracketron that I picked up at costco...it's awesome and since the iPhone is my main nav tool, it works perfectly. Now if I can just get the perfect app I'll be 100% good to go =)

I just came up with this earlier today:

gps-1.jpg

gps-2.jpg

gps-3.jpg

The last photo is the one that makes this work. The small Ram Mount ball is not big enough for the Magellan mount to get good purchase.
I found some rigid plastic tubing that was just about the right diameter, but it was slightly to small.
I dropped the tubing into a pot of boiling water for a minute or two and was able to slide it over the ball.
It's on there tightly, and now it's the perfect size for the Magellan mount to grab it firmly.
