Finally my own RTT

a few of the RTTs setup in minutes, are nearly as quiet and comfy as our bed at home and stand up to years of use/abuse but aren't considered as good of a value by some due to a higher purchase price

What models would those be? (PM if you feel it is inapropriate to mention brands on the forum). A high quality product that lasts many years, to me, is well worth paying more for up front...especially when even the cheapest RTT's are not cheap by any means.

Less than a minute to crank mine up.
It is a Maggiolina AirLand medium.

I will have a better video by the weekend.
My vacation was postponed that I was suppose to leave on Monday for, but I am pretty sure I am heading out to the mountains tomorrow.

PM sent.

If you're in the market for an RTT it's definitely worth the time to view a few of the different models in person and practice deploying/stowing them (including removing/installing the travel cover and/or rainfly) by yourself. IMO-There's a significant time difference and hassle factor between various designs.

Pardon my ignorance, but why are the roof top tents so popular versus a tent that is on the ground?

My reason was ease of set up, I'm off the ground (the GF Likes this), no rocks or unseen roots in your back, and the size of the tent. If you are setting up every night and breaking down every morning, RTT's can't be beat.

And yes, I think it's very cool.

bluedog- Nice Cruiser.

Great question. I use both my RTT (Maggiolina) and ground tent (currently using an REI 2-man) frequently and switch between the two, year 'round, depending on the trip. All things being equal, I prefer the RTT but I often wonder why people are so enamored with some of the RTT models. I've gotten to see/experience just about every one of the RTTs in the field. Some of them take longer to setup than any ground tent I've owned, aren't quiet, comfortable (IMHO) or weatherproof due to cheap materials/poor workmanship yet many Expo members say they're "great". On the other hand, a few of the RTTs setup in minutes, are nearly as quiet and comfy as our bed at home and stand up to years of use/abuse but aren't considered as good of a value by some due to a higher purchase price. Different strokes for different folks I guess... :)

Just an observation: I see a lot of pics of of the "newer" RTTs being setup in Expo member's driveways but not so many from out in the field, yet. I'm curious how these models (both the tent and tent-covers) will fare after a few years of travel and dozens of deploy/stow cycles?

Keep in mind more expensive doesn't always = better. My Cabelas 4 person $179.00 tent has lasted for 6 yrs, rain, cold, heat, no problems and no worse than my hi zoot Marmot tent which was 3 times the price. The Cabelas tent has a few more features too.

This RTT takes me less than 5 minutes to deploy on top of the cruiser. It takes that long to get most tents out of the bag, lay out, and get your poles organised. If it's raining an RTT is the wat to go, mine deploys with the rain fly ready for action. I will get to use it in a few days for the first time and have 2 or 3 other trips planned for the rest of the year. My 20 years in retail have shown me that longevity of any "thing" has must to do with the care and feeding by the user. I have see the same things last only a season by one and several years by another We'll see how she holds up over the next few years.

I agree. The best tent is the one that gets you out under the stars most often.

Yep. I've also learned that quality construction makes the proper care and feeding of any "thing" easier.

Have a fun trip and enjoy your new tent. It looks great on top of your Cruiser.
