Love the craftsmanship of this build. Telwyn I notice you have on your signature listed the Light weight and your Range Rover MKIII but I do not see listed the D90(yellow) posted on your Gallery.

Great built love the color. Was that powdercoated in that tan or did you paint it with lacquer paint?

Great job on the Battery build too. I might make mine very similar to your build... in regards to the wiring as far as the box I might not need it as my trailer has compartments which are closed where I can keep moisture out.

Great build again!! Congrats :victory:... but will you be doing more additions to it?

Thanks for the kind comments. The build has been a lot of fun, but definitely at a tortoise pace compared to most of the builds on ExPo.

Regarding the trailer paint, I had it sandblasted and then painted with a really high end paint (can't recall which one) at a great body shop in St. Pete. They really did a good job on it. In fact, the paint turned out so well, I'm half tempted to do the same on the Lightweight, but there's something about the patina of multiple peeling layers that I can bring myself to part with!

The tub is painted with por15 and although not Line-X, it's a really durable bottom to the tub. I do wish I had lined the side walls of the tub as well, but perhaps later.

Still lots and lots on my to-do/wish list including:

  • Paint the frame and the military rover bumper stops black to match the frame/bumpers on the Lightweight
  • Put an undercoating under the trailer as I have on the Lightweight. Corrossion is a big issue here in FL and I want to protect the trailer as best as possible for the long run. Just like the Lightweight, I hope to own it for my lifetime.
  • Extend the tongue a bit while keeping the lunette/pintle combo. Need it about 2 feet longer when hauling the kayaks and I think a slightly longer tongue may improve my backing ability.
  • Build a lockable lid for safer storage of gear.
  • Mount the AT crossbars they built for me to the lid and use with the Thule kayak mounts
  • Install the AT led worklamps on the yet to be built lid
  • Create a functional kitchen. Almost bought a Drifta kitchen, but held off due to cost. Have a metal shelf I bought on ExPo (think it's an AT) for holding my Snow Peak dual burner stove. But would like an actual kitchen counter to pull out as some others are doing on ExPo. I've already wired an extra 12v socket in the tub to power my Waeco CF-50.
  • Come up with either a solar solution or recharging system to the Lightweight for longer trips to ensure the battery in the nosebox doesn't die. I have a battery tender to recharge from shore power and keep it topped off.

As for the yellow D90, that belongs to a buddy of mine. We did a trail run in December and on the way up there I blew the head gasket on my Lightweight so we had to pile into his D90 and run the trails in his rig. Thought it was a really cool action shot so I posted it here, but can't claim ownership of that Rover.

Great pictures. The Yakima Low Rider tower (Yakima # 00118 set of 4) was discontinued for 2010 and might be difficult to find. I did find them online from sunandski.com.

Yakima Low Rider

Got a pm asking about how the clearance looked with the Yakima Low Rider vs. the rim of the tub. Two photos below, one with a tape measure to give a sense of distance. Hope these are helpful...

Wel, it’s about a decade later and I’m back and am working on my trailer build again. Here’s some updated photos of the trailer now. Latest build is still underway.IMG_0128.jpegIMG_0129.jpegIMG_2236.jpegIMG_2239.jpegIMG_2295.jpegIMG_2298.jpegIMG_2392.jpegIMG_2403.jpegIMG_2406.jpeg

Well, not quite a decade ...

It’s a shame you have to loose all your stickers, especially the wild boar. Gotta be my favorite.

Love the lid. Well done. Why the new color? Did the old color fade too much?

Yeah, it’s a bummer about the stickers. Upside is I get to start the sticker collection anew.

Going with a new color because I’m also doing a build on my 1980 Land Rover Lightweight Series III and need to select a new color for it. Going to go with the same color for both. Here’s the color I’m using. Trying to keep the paint color fairly original since it’s a Military Rover and trailer. https://paintman.co.uk/shop/nato-light-stone-satin/

Got the lid from these folks. Isn’t cheap, but it’s really well built. I paid a premium for sure, but am glad to have it done and I feel like it’s worth every penny. http://rockboxoffroad.com/shop/rockbox/rbx-m416-lid-retrofit/

Sorry, I don’t have photos going back that far anymore on my iPad... But when we attach the box to the trailer tongue the second time around I’ll be show to take some photos and share them here. My recollection from the first time is we put 4 bolts through the floor of the box through the flat portions of the A frame of the tongue beneath the box and that it was rock solid that way.

Actually if you closely at this photo you can see the four bolt holes on the a frame of the tongue that I referenced in the comment above. I zoomed in when I posted this photo so it’s a little fuzzy but you can see where I bolted the box.IMG_2422.jpeg

Aah, ok, I miss understood the earlier post then. I thought you bolted bars to the trailer first and then the box to the bars. So that box should work as a direct bolt-on. Sweet! Look forward to more of your build/rebuild.

I also have a 1967. I am having trouble finding someone to fabricate a lid for me but have a few options in the wind. I have completely rebuilt mine using all stainless hardware and had it powder coated. Put Hankook ATM RF10's on the stock powder coated rims. Axle is rebuilt, brake cable, wiring, lights all new, etc...It was a lot of money and sweat equity but it should last another 50 years. Anyway please keep posting your progress and thanks for the help(y)
