First Day of LR3 Ownership - Perfect Vehicle - Right Until It's Not

I grinned all day long in the new to me LR3. Tooled around, tested things out, played, then went to take the dog to the park after about 100 miles of mixed highway/city driving. The motor just died, quietly coasting to a halt with a check engine light. I shut it down, let it sit for a couple minutes, it wouldn't start. I took the battery cables off for a couple minutes and touched them together, it wouldn't start. I had it towed home, read and cleared the codes, it wouldn't start. It's either not getting a spark or not getting fuel. The car had 1/2 tank and it wasn't a sputter or attempt, it went from running fine to fully dead instantly.

Additionally, when I try starting it, it continues to run the start even after I release it back to the 'Run' position. The starter doesn't stop cranking until I turn the key back to 'Accessory' or 'Off'.

Has anyone had this happen before? I copied the codes from various ECUs before I cleared them. They're included below. So is a picture, because broken or not, I love this truck, and it will be my tow vehicle whether it likes me or not.

2006. If the ECU's went kaput, I would expect more substantial problems than what I'm getting. All the accessories are working fine, it just won't spark and ignite on starter crank. Also, wouldn't the GAP IIDTool be unable to read and clear ECU fault codes if any/all of the ECUs were dead?

That is the best looking broke down truck I've seen in a while! :)

Seriously, it does sound like a computer or relay issue to me ... but couldn't say for sure.
It sticks cause I know this truck has served the PO without fail for almost a year. Prior to that it was owned by a chopper pilot and before him a fly fishing outfit in Colorado who built the truck with no expense spared. (much like my truck's history).
I hope you can get it sorted.

That makes good sense. Perhaps it has something to do with the dual battery system? I know the onboard compressor had just been installed before the PO purchased the truck and I don't believe it has even been used. You may check where the connections were when it was installed. Perhaps something is breaking the electronic cycle?

Check your PMs :D I had questions about what kind of Viair and dual battery system was installed. At first light tomorrow I'll get to work on the electronics and seeing if there's anything out of place.

I had the exact same thing happen to my 05 with 107,000 about a month ago. I had it about 12 hours, it was running great and just died. Same sputter and the starter would keep going. The fuel gauge read full and I had no fuel light on but it felt exactly like I ran out of gas. sure enough I had. One/both of the level sending units went out. It read full but was just out of gas. The pumps still worked fine and it had no codes about the fuel system/problem, so just put some gas in and see what happens :snorkel:

There is a fiber cable wiring harness roughly located about where the firewall is under the truck, near the tranny tunnel. I had a lot of weird "failure to communicate" errors once, when this connector got corroded. I disassembled it, cleaned it thoroughly, and put it back together, and all was good again...once I cleared the faults. There was a technical service bulletin (TSB) out on this for 2005/6 model years and possibly for subsequent years but I don't know.

Ouch! I just bought a 2006 myself last month.

Communication errors are quite common on LR3S and RRS and nothing to worry about. But the low voltage code is something to check and be sure you check both batteries as it sounds like you have a dual battery setup. Rovers hate low voltage. Test fuel pressure next.

Hope you are just out of gas. That just happened to a friend's sister in her Toyota where she ran out of gas but the sender unit showed 1/4 tank. Towed it to a shop where they insisted it was the fuel pump but it started right up after some gas.

Alright here's my escalation of force list for the morning:

1) Put in a couple gallons of petrol.
2) Triple check battery connections.
3) Check/Clean fiber cable wiring harness at firewall and tranny tunnel.
4) Replace fuel pump relay.

Back to the internet for more research.

I honestly hate this, as I was the seller. As Dendy mentioned, the truck has beed flawless for us! And the new owner has been extremely understanding, and not the least accusatory, which is amazing in these times. I am hoping, and suggested petrol initially, that it is that simple.

Timing is everything, and this was just posted on another site this am:

I've never made a decision that had financial sense involving Land Rovers. If I had all the money I've ever spent on Land Rovers I would have enough to fix my Land Rovers... maybe.

No problem, Dale. Like I said before I bought it, your work precedes you and I've lurked/researched/read on this forum for a long time before I created an account. I wish more people accepted that things happen, there's no way to predict how or when. That's part of buying an 8 year old car or a brand new one. I have a 2014 WK2 that is five months old, and has been inside a Jeep service bay for 7.5 weeks and still isn't fixed. Cars have tens of thousands of components, sometimes things just break. My opinion is that if a person can't handle that, they need to take a bus :D

Fixed! Happy to report by the end of step one she was fixed. Lesson: always top the gas tank off on a car when you first get it, that way you know if the fuel level gauge is lying to you :D
