Good question. Wish I gave a rip about the answer.

You missed the point entirely. For all I knew he would have looked at his hammer being pulled back and said, "Oh, gee, thanks for telling me." Or, "Thanks, it's safe like that." Either way, I didn't care. Thought I was possibly being helpful.

What I didn't really need was him telling me it would expedite his ability to - shoot me. Classy.
Do you check people's buttons zippers or shoelaces? You're full of poop. Your motivation for doing what you did was to cause some sort of conflict.

I am suggesting that it is none of my business how you carry. You do what works for you.

Is there not benefit to discussing best practice? Is that not the nature of an open forum? Discuss ideas, merits of certain solutions, pros and cons. . .

Absolutely do what works for you. . . just be educated on the 'why'

Not at all. For all I knew the dude was moments away from shooting his own foot Apple Dumpling Gang style.

I guess that's my point also. I'm much more likely to conceal, because I don't like attention good or bad. But I'm 100% happy for those that regularly open carry and I want those people to not get questioned about it.

That would be like discussing the best vehicle for "overland" travel lol.

Unless the trigger is pulled his junk will be fine BUT to get back on topic to carryings while traveling, be familiar with what is appropriate for where you are and don't judge people based on some preconceived notion.

I fixing to carry in a place that has a no weapons sign, concealed is better in this situation.

I generally do not tell people if I carry or not, or whether I even own a firearm. While out "overlanding", if needed I will/would have an array of less than lethal items to use first. If a firearm were recommended because of wildlife activity, I will/would probably carry one. If there is a lot of criminal activity in an area, then I will just go elsewhere.

I feel open carry serves little purpose in crowded area.

Knowing how to use one does not mean I want to use one.

You would have to lay out a scenario. I prefer concealed. Open can be quicker and safer on the draw. And deterrent may be a benift. It is impossible to know how many crimes didn't happen because they say somebody open carrying. My bet most criminals look for easy targets and don't to mess with somebody who has quick access to a gun.

So open carrying a .22 target pistol in a covered (beautiful hand-made custom) leather snap-down flap holster, loaded with snake shot, while camping and puttering around in snake country, is tactically unsound, because it just screams "bite me first" to any experienced pit viper.

Okay, I get that. I admit it, I'm just not a tactical kind of guy. More of a strategic sort really.

(Though I suspect any rattlers (or rabbits or squirrels) who tried to grab that pistol might be somewhat surprised by the little .38 in my off hand that I just pulled out of my pocket while they were trying to get the flap holster open.)

Anyway, since the topic is gun carry + overland, what I'd really like is for Mr. Brady to drop the other shoe of that tantalizing hint about gun carrying overseas.

Let's browbeat Scott into giving us the lowdown on that. Who's with me?

What if it's someone who's clearly Muslim, or a black guy wearing gang-looking clothing, or someone with piercings in every appendage?

Most people carrying on and on about rights are really only concerned about their rights or the rights that they deem to be important based on their particular ideological leanings. All other rights are subject to interpretation.

I think they should open carry, since I, for one, am going to assume scary people like that are carrying anyway.

(Sarcasm, interwebs folks, that was sarcasm.)
