That is the mistaken assumption most open carriers make. They believe it is a show of force. In fact, it is exactly the opposite. The criminal will just shoot you in the back when you are not looking. Open carry = Giant target and tactically unsound practice in an urban scenario. Just a fact.

I would rather be unarmed than open carry in an urban setting.

I pocket carry but many who I see open carry have holsters that cover the gun, unless you are close they just look like big cell phone cases.

I agree with Scott Brady. I only carry when I am in the wilderness. Sometimes my wilderness travels take me through towns. It's easier to just leave things as they are, especially since my off-road vehicle of choice has no place to secure a weapon, making it far safer to be with me and irresponsible to leave a weapon inside. I would have to say that wherever I carry and in whatever towns I go through, people don't criticize me or challenge me to justify myself - it's just never been an issue, and I guess that's what baffles me as to why it is such a big deal.

It is sad that some must rely on stereotypes and generalizations to support their POV, then fall back on personal attacks when called on it. Believe what you want, but I am no cowboy and I don't wear spurs, they get in the way of the accelerator pedal and tend to trip me up getting in and out of my rig. I carry, and I feel zero need to justify why. If you don't like it, don't look at me, but please don't confront me and try to make a scene, you would just embarrass yourself. You don't carry - I support your decision and I'm certainly not going to confront you and demand you tell me why. I would expect the same consideration, or is that too much to ask?

I can see it's on the edge of devolving into an argument, which is unsurprising. There's generally two sides to this issue. There's a middle road as well, it generally speaking two sides. One side is "it's my right to carry and carry as I see fit within the confines of the law, but if you don't wish to that's your right as well", and the other side where "it's my right to not have/carry a firearm, and I don't think you should either and I'll take you to task for doing so".

A criminal is not looking for a civilian with a gun on his side, and would never noticed unless he was astute enough to really be thinking/scoping things out. Bad guys are just looking to a get some money and run. You are giving them way too much credit, plus I don't think there has been such a documented scenario like you have suggested.

Open carry = Target. Everyone in the training and law enforcement world recognize this. You are welcome to believe otherwise.

The OP was asking about carrying while overlanding, which for most posters in this forum seems to be about off-highway travel and camping. I can imagine a scenario where an opportunistic criminal in some remote location might be deterred by the sight of a holstered weapon at the side of a potential victim.

For full disclosure, I'm neither advocating nor condemning any form of gun ownership or possession. Like most topics that people like to paint as black and white, it's way more complicated than they'd like to believe.

I bet a 2 minute Google search would find also sorts of stories about people robbing people for alsorts of reasons.

Here one about cell phones. Stop using cell phones.

Why would you carry a gun if you didn't want to be ready to shot someone or something?
Good question. Wish I gave a rip about the answer.

You missed the point entirely. For all I knew he would have looked at his hammer being pulled back and said, "Oh, gee, thanks for telling me." Or, "Thanks, it's safe like that." Either way, I didn't care. Thought I was possibly being helpful.

What I didn't really need was him telling me it would expedite his ability to - shoot me. Classy.
