Now we see why open carry is important if not outright patriotic.
The American way, Pass the buck !

Personal defense is just that. I am not a cop, it is not my job to protect others. I will protect my family and myself. If I ever had to shot someone the ramification could be crushing. I will not take on the risk or responsibility for anybody other than my family or myself. Some will see this as selfish. It is my responsibility to take care of my family, doing something that could cause them hardship would be irresponsible of me.

Sounds reasonable. On the other hand, is it possible you'd be putting your family at greater risk by open carrying? I'm not saying that is or isn't the case, I'm just trying to hear different perspectives on this since its a topic I had never considered prior to this thread.

I don't open carry.

Open carry is good. If it draws the bad guy's attention to the armed guy it draws attention away from me. If it provided me a chance for my family to escape that would be a benefit. If I had to take a shot and the shooter was concentrating on someone else all the better. If the armed guy provided a deterrent than I don't have to worry about it at all.

PS. I just got a text from Amazon, my LEDs for my Jeep have been delivered.

The topic under discussion was open carry. Your response to Verkstad suggested that open carry provides a deterrent to criminals, thus providing better protection to one's self and family. In case you didn't notice, you wrote that response in first person. But whether or not you open carry is irrelevant to my question.

I support open carry therefore it's relevant. I see open carry as a benefit to me whether or not I do it myself

You asked if I thought it would but my family in danger if I open carry. I don't open carry but my thoughts are I would assume it would more likely be a deterrent then an invitation to confront me. Would it make me a target in a crowd? I don't think a bad guy is going to examine the crowd in that detail and execute people who are open carrying.

I'm not tired and was sincerely soliciting an opinion on a topic I know little about. I have no horse in this race other than trying to become better informed on people's views (and poke fun once in awhile). I asked a serious, non-confrontational question. Sorry if that offends your senses.

And you'll no doubt be adding your $0.02 to this dead horse just like MagicMountain did several pages back.

Gotcha. That's all I was asking about. Btw: I wasn't specifically referring to you or your family; rather just open carry in general.

Lol not offended at all, merely saying I wasn't gonna beat the horse anymore, I'll just watch others take a few swings at it. I like what you have to say.

No worries. My PMS has me a bit moody. (Precarious Mental Stability)

Btw: these threads are usually useless for the first few dozen pages while emotions and vitriol are being exhausted. Then thoughtful discussion can commence.

With the world as crazy as it is what are the laws with guns while camping. Growing up in 70s and 80s in MO we used to camp on friends farms, campgounds or go to Arkansas and do Buffalo River canoe trips and not think twice about danger, great times.
It was not until later the whole "deliverance" got me thinking. We used to hunt all the time but stayed in the farm house and of course locked and loaded. Trying to get my wife to camp in the new build, not we would go anywhere to off the beaten path, but I would do what I needed to do to protect her if I had to.
So just wanted to see your thoughts on carrying while out in the wilderness.
Kevin

I read all 36 pages. Impressed folks tried to post intelligent arguments for-and-against. Smart people on this portal.

If I've got my wife and daughter with me, of course I'm carrying (and my wife's probably carrying too). Even if it is just an afternoon hike in the woods at a park. And we're carrying concealed (don't want to draw attention to ourselves). I've never had to use it in any way shape-or-form, but I'd rather have it and not need it then regret not having it when needed. Some folks don't want to believe there are bad people out there that do not have your best interests in mind, and really don't mind hurting or even killing you to get what they want from you (or to do it just for fun).

When we're "overlanding", I've probably got at least a short barrel 44 Mag lever action rifle in the truck or Jeep too, and possibly a shotgun. And bear spray when up in Alaska and Canada (and damn Canadian handgun laws which limits me to rifles and shotguns).

And as an aside, I've done two tours to Iraq, and one to Afghanistan. Everyone there is armed, and so polite to each other (like at the door to a dining facility: "After you Sir; no - after you...").
