Ford Ranger Debut

We'll find out soon. The frame and chassis for the North American Ranger will be manufactured separately from the global version. I do recall seeing a magazine (Car and Driver I think) compare the two frames and noted they looked to be pretty much the same, at least appearance-wise.

I don't know if Ford will de-rate the Ranger much, if at all. With the appropriate options, some of the F-150's have payload ratings of ~2.7klbs and tow ratings of ~11.3klbs, which is well into 3/4 ton territory. I think a high-payload Ranger will have a minimal impact on F-150 sales. I would like to see them allow for at least 1.6k lbs payloads; any rating between there and 2k lbs is more than adequate for a mid-sized truck.

I can't imagine them re-inventing the wheel so to speak with the frame. R&D dollars have already been spent in the OZ market, why change the manufacturing process over here? maybe they are changing the wordage of the materials being used, but not the actual product. I know the term "High Strength Steel" gets tossed around a lot here in the marketing campaigns, what is called overseas? (not sure I haven't looked) What is "high strength steel" anyways? Do they number it like tubing? 531, 520, 853, 4130, True Tempered, etc....

While the specs on the turbo engine appear they are going to be very good, too bad it isn't getting the 3.3 NA V6, to simplify things a touch in this ever getting more complex world of ours.

I doubt it gets the more costly and better sealed round filter intake air box which looks like the same set up my 93 Land Cruiser had.

I recall reading some place that North American trucks the GM and the Ranger get some areas of the frames reworked to deal with crash standards / performance and also reduced flex under the cab to meet US customer interior quality expectations. So if anything there may be areas of the frame that are designed for better performance in various ways over the non US spec models

Couldn't agree more. It would be nice to see this engine show up as an option in the Ranger.

The numbers are pretty good on the 3.3. 290 hp at 6,500 rpm and 265 lb-ft of torque at 2,750 rpm, supposedly 25 mpg in the 2WD F150 backed by the 6 speed auto.

It sounds like just some minor tweaks here and there.

@Dave in Denver, saw your post on the steel ratings, went to quote it to thank you, but it disappeared...anyways, thanks for the info.

I think this Ranger is just about perfect. I love the looks and think the 2.3T was the right engine for the job. There are no reliability issues with the 2.3 eco boost except in the Focus RS, but that has been explained and Ford is fixing it....shouldn't be a problem for the truck. If similar trims are a few thousand cheaper than the full size, plenty of people will buy it, as it's a great size for the people who don't need the capability and/or space that a full size has, while still being twice the truck the last Ranger was.

With that said, the Ranger reveal got me so excited about trucks, I went out and bought an F150 last weekend. Max tow package got me a 3270lb payload and 13,200lb tow rating. Would I rather drive a smaller truck? Probably, but this one has the room I need for family adventures, so I decided not to wait for the Ranger.

The specs on these new F series are crazy. So is the price tag 😄

My neighbor just bought a F250 4x4 diesel max tow kit etc. 500hp! Wholly biblical hp man! Its also quiet. Id even say it quieter than my 2.5 Subaru at cold start which reminds me of the old Cessna 172 I flew for solo hours. LOL

The diesel horsepower/torque ********-measuring contest currently taking place between the big 3 is pretty ridiculous. 440hp/+900ft-lb is insane for a crew cab pickup and I doubt most, if any, consumers really need or want that kind of performance.

I'd rather see them focus on continuing the improvement of fuel efficiency and reliability.

In my neighbors case he does big man made lake projects was retired but got pulled back in after a year of retirement. In his case he drags around some big equipment at times.

I wasn't passing judgement on the individual consumer/owners. I'm just noting that the trend among OEM's towards increasing horsepower and torque seems to be taking up effort and focus that could be better spent elsewhere.

No doubt!! 500hp 900ftlb is Peterbuilt territory

Today I'm not pro GM or Ford both build good machines. But the ford sync in my wife's 16 is complete ****e!!!!! GM has a far better approach using top apps etc. God I hate the Ford system with a passion.

Sync3 works great in my F150. It also has Apple CarPlay, which I also like. I've heard the older units, especially MyFordTouch, had issues, but this one works great. With the Sync I like being able to have my music, phone and navigation all on the screen at the same time.

I didn't think the price was too bad, considering what I got and all of the thoughtful little details. I paid $43k (before TTL) for a fully loaded XLT w/ sport package. 3.5 ecoboost, 10 speed auto, max tow, trailer backup assist, electronic locking rear diff., spray in bed liner, sliding rear window, etc.

Its a hit here in the Philippines and currently we have diesel variants. All made in Thailand, Ford's Asian Manufacturing Hub, which have a lot of aftermarket support. Current mechanical concerns to address are: 1. Turbo premature failure 2. Rack and Pinion premature wear nonetheless it's a capable truck.
