Forward Control Jeep (FC)-Scott Brady's Test Drive- A Great Read!!

I think the thing with portals is regular preventive maintenance, which goes for any axles, portal or independent suspension or solid axles. Really its only a few extra moving parts so as long as you keep the lubrication fresh they should last a lifetime. Military hummers and H1s use them without any deal killing problems so they must be good enough.....

For those of you who want one of these, here's a chance to build your own....a couple years ago I was on my dirt bike checking out an old mining district out in a very high and remote part of Nevada and came upon the below parked in the trees and brush:

As you can see, the entire drivetrain is gone but I think a good body shop man could have that body looking just like new. Find a chassis to sit it on and good to go! I was most impressed with the length of the bed - that thing is 10' long!

But how to get that thing out of where it is resting - that would be difficult. And no, that is not my beer bottle on top of the cab!

Actually I know of one sitting on its' original chassis...in fairly good condition parked in a salvage yard not too far from me. Maybe I'll swing by and snap some pictures.

Keep in mind that although it looks like a truck, it is still a Jeep Wrangler frame and drivetrain. Everyone knows that Jeep will never make this a production vehicle so it isnt much to worry about, but there has been talk of maybe someone doing a Brute-like conversion. That is great until someone decides to put a load of gravel in the bed or tow something of decent size with it. Bad news bears. I love the concept and think it is cool as heck, but it needs to be built off of at least a 1/2ton truck frame/motor/axles/brakes.

The JK is basically a half ton truck or better as far as components go.

The J8 program vehicles have a payload ( in the 'bed' ) of the vehicle of 2000lbs and a tow capacity of 7000lbs. The J8 isn't THAT far away from its JK heritage. I'm not saying that you can treat the stock JK like that, but it has potential.

I was under the impression that the J8 had a different: motor, frame, rear suspension, axles, wheels, and brakes. If the JK and the J8 were that close in design, then that is a huge jump in towing capacity from 3500 to 7000lbs. Maybe the JK is just severely under-rated?

There is truth to this. The JK frame is actually more robust (torsion and rigidity) than a Ram 1500. The J8 is even stronger.

The J8 is MUCH improved from its JK roots, but there is still a LOT of commonality between the two.

-Engine is a diesel, basically similar to the current overseas 2.8 CRD used in current production but a more 'simple' version without DPF. The J8 has an improved cooling system and air cleaner system.

-The transmission in the new J8 is listed as the same as the 2012 wrangler, the W5A580. The older J8 used the 545RFE automatic. Both are GREAT automatics. The current W5A580 is factory rated to something insane like 700ft lbs.

-Transfer case is the same unit.

-The D44 front is similar. The J8 gets heavier wall tubing. It also gets larger brakes and 5 on 5.5 unit-bearings reportedly from the 2010 dodge ram 1500.

-The rear axle on the J8 is a Dana 60 35-spline semi-floater C_CLIP axle that was suppose to come from the SRT-10 program. It also has nice big brakes.

I talked with people that know, and supposedly the J8 frame is much the same as the JK, basically a JK frame with some better reinforcement brackets on the main frame splices.

The rear suspension was changed to leaf springs to help with load capacity and sway control when at high loads and towing. The same thing could be done with the coil/link suspension but would probably cost a bit more and require more development time. The new 1500 dodge is coil rear correct?

All in all, the J8 is improved, but its not THAT far away from its roots.

Awesome read, and certainly I truly AWESOME concept truck (even more cool that it actually WORKS) BUT, something struck me as kinda off about a very prolific statement at the beginning of the article:

"...The F-C is another important project for the Jeep design team as it continues to push and reinforce the brand emphasis on utility and brand heritage. While other US brands have bloated and softened their product lines at nearly the same rate as American waistlines, Jeep has actually become more capable and more purposeful (no, I will not use the word authenticity, which now has as much meaning as synergy or excellence. . . puke). The point here is that Jeep's design team gets it - and not just at the level of enthusiasts, but even beyond that by making concepts that even the enthusiasts get all giddy about. This is an important distinction. Mark Allen and his team do not have focus groups or customer 'needs' pow wows, they are thinking of extremely cool vehicles that even the most die-hard Jeep enthusiast hasn't dreamed up. Now understandably, vehicles like the NuKaiser and the F-C will never go into production, but real, breathing and desirable vehicles will be constructed from the DNA of these lustful objects." While I agree with 99% of what you said, I'd like to point out that in REALITY, Jeep has ONE actual worthwhile 4wd so where pray-tell will this tech be showing up??? There's nothing under the FC's skinn that isn't under the Wrangler Rubi's (albeit maybe physicaly LARGER" axles... but still, in REALITY Jeep HAS bloated their product line with things that would make the original Jeep designers puke (compas anyone???) and tried to pass them off a "trail rated" (who's trails I'll never truly understand) while "Walking-Path Rated" might be a better/more honest moniker... Anyway, I guess I'm just kinda put off by how Jeep continues to make these amazing vehicles but in the end defer's to making soccer-mom's happier then the rest of us all the while dodging the TRUE need we have and that is a Diesel powered Wrangler (although I hear it's ACTUALY coming but I'll belive it when I see it...)

Anyway, YES, I agree with most of the article, but to say Jeep hasn't followed suit with the rest of US truck makers is only maybe 1% accurate. 1 truck doesn't make a brand and Jeep certainly has MORE then some folks share of completely INcapable vehicles with their names on them so... While they're no GM, they still have 99% mall crawlers to 1% actual 4wd's.

Still, the FC and Nukaiser are certainly awesome trucks and what I love even more is they were actually BUILT TO PLAY not just sit on a pedestal at an auto show.

OT Side note : Just went out and wheeled my friends 2012 3.6 Rubi yesterday and I gotta say, while it's still WAY shy of what I would consider a "trucks" torque band (the 4.0L it is NOT but it winds far better aye) it was SO MUCH better then the 3.8 I feel REAL sorry for anyone who bought the older trucks... Also got a new Grand stuck as Stuck can be. Sorry, but the Cherokee is D E A D dead... REALLY comfy out on the highway and SO fun on the gravel roads when driven like a Rally car, but it's hopeless when the trails get tight and complicated (course it's spring here in the NW and alot of "built" trucks were struggling too, but still, I lament the loss of the WK despite having left the Jeep fold long ago for great cause (although I WAS driving my dad's 98 XJ UC and it was quite happy pulling "recovery" duty for it's "new" big brother... Good old 4.0L, now if you just were in a body on frame truck I'd still love you ;)

Cheers

details...

Hello all...

Been doing some investigating on this...

Yup, engine is behind the cab, as the interior shots show NO doghouse... read somewhere that they moved it (the engine) back a bit. The house in the box is where the eng sits I'm assuming. Then u have the transmission, and TC, so that is why the bed is so high.

These portals are built by Axle Tech, so parts should not be an issue down the rd...

Measured things up and I'm guessing that the FC is a stock length JK 4 door frame.

Steering?? Poss a RH drive steering gear flipped to the LH side with some clever joints from the columne down?

Power brake booster?? remote mounted?

With all that said, up in BC a person can build a vehicle and register it as "ubuilt"...

Thinking I mght build a 4 door version based on a 4 door wrangler! 6' box and 4 doors is well proportioned in the pics made up in this thread... rear doors would be a little different from the pics...

Not sure on the portals... gear whine is an issue as is the $23000.00 bucks for a pair...

Time will tell I guess.
