I do my NPS every 40000Km.- Front & Rear
On the FGs it is similar.
The job is not difficult just a bit time consuming the first time.
It also gives a good chance to to check the brakes, & the brake adjuster operation.
Engineer runs a few FGs over hear doing a fair number of miles a year

The manual has the brake inspection at the same time as well as diff oil changes.
I also do a brake fluid replacement as well
It takes me 2 hrs to do the rear axle & 3 hrs to do the front axle.
I don't remove the wheels from the drums as I use a pallet jack to slide the assy off.
There is usually a few cups of coffee as well included in that time.

I do my F150 every time I replace front pads or when it gets REALLY wet (deep crossings, etc.). It usually ends up being 20-40 thousand miles.
the first couple times it IS complicated, but once you gather up all the tools required, it's pretty easy and goes quick. What used to take me a full day in the driveway now takes two hours, and it's done WAAY better than the monkeys at the auto shop will do it.

Not really hard, but a bit physical when compared to say a land cruiser or suzuki samuri.
I learn each new vehicle by getting the exploded parts description first and taping to the door above me.
You can ussually work out why something wont move by the exploded drawing i.e. circlip etc, and as I remove each part, I lay it out on an old white bed sheet in the exact order of dis-assmebly. I will wipe each component down with a rag before placing it on the sheet. After the first go I'm normally pretty right with it all, but I do them rather frequently too.
The only thing that really gives me the ****s with the steer is the "special" bearing that I have to buy from Koyo
