It depends on what size tyre you want to go for, most opt for the 35" x 16" 315/75/16 in high load rating (127) Kumho are the most popular available from just about any tyre store, they normally sell for around the $360 dollar mark, Mickey thompson also have some, cooper tyres have this size and load rating as well, on 16" wheels this is like a big airbag so you get a better ride, the forged alloy rims are also stronger than steel, don't rust, balance easier, less unsprung weight so better control, are machined to within 00.10 of a mm, lighter so easy to change, look great! DOT tested and approved.

yes I know
my dilema is supply
when i get the chance im definatley going to go for ATW's parabolics thats a definate
WRT wheels and tyres Im stuck on availability in unusual places
19.5's are basicaly a small diameter truck drive tyre and available just about anywhere at short notice
big chunky 16's Im not so sure about
I must admit I havent gone hunting for options as yet but what I read on the forum where players are ordering from the US etc puts me off side
I replaced my steer 750 x 16's in Karatha, they had to get them up from Perth, that wasnt a problem and didnt take to long but
Im sure I would have looked like some big gay city wuss bag had I asked for some exotic wide 16's
and chances are Id still be in Karatha
and seeing as when we leave Darwin its accross the top, no place to do a tire at the best of times
Im probably mis informed
Alan youve done your homework. whats you take on it

With your skills Alan, I would have thought that a small hydraulic raising/lowering system for the bullbar would have been a simple thing for you to add.
You could even go as far as to incorporate a trigger into the cab latching mechanism, so as soon as you unlatch the cab the bull bar is lowered. ;)

your making more work for me! i just realised this threads been going for 2 years! I need to get it done:smiley_drive:

what Alans going to have to do is install a hydraulic mechanism to tilt his cab
after doing the seats and consoles etc in mine the cab now weighs a ton
much heavier than when standard
and I only have basic seats not those big electric ones like in the beige beastie
trust me undoing the ring bolts and lowering an alloy bar will be the easy bit

youll have to send me a piccy of some kumho's on rims, next to a standard tyre would be good (if you have one)
most of my driving is black top and dirt with a tad of beach
WRT balancing, do they have to be balanced>, the majority of tyre fitters outside the city dont balance 7.50's
but im interested for sure
anything that will make the ride better has to be a good thing

As Alan said there is a picture on my thread of the difference in size between 750/16 and 315/75 -16. The difference in ride is unreal , tyre balance I did with stainless tyre beads still very happy with them. I wouldn't even run 750s without balancing Only had one flat and that was a stone through the tread not the gap in between. Used a magnet to collect the beads to put back in the tyre ( not a good stainless ). I fix my own tyres not paying $25.00 to have a tyre fixed. The dealer that I got my Kuhmos from said he could supply Hankooks with a more tar friendly tread in the same size. He was also saying that this size is now becoming very popular in Australia so I don't see having to ever to bring them in myself. Dan.

Out of interest Alan... what do you estimate your departure angle will be with the water tank positioned where it is?

What were you reasons for choosing aluminum for the camper?

I had a hard time deciding between aluminum and steel.

Sure steel is heavier, but you end up using 2x thicker aluminum to give the same strength plus aluminum welds are 2x to 3x weaker than the base metal.

For a four season camper, using smaller steel cross section members means I can have more foam insulation between the inside of the camper and the metal - better thermal isolation.

I do like the stigma of aluminum being so much better than steel for resale value though...
