Garmin eTrex Handheld GPS

I was wondering if anyone was familiar with this model and its pro's and con's.

I have had a one - they are really great units - grab a sat signal quickly, good screen, good size, & lots of features too. I am not such a fan of the side buttons - it can be a bit trickey for a dummy like me to remember what everything does. :wavey:

Be sure to get one of the "x" models. That is Garmin speak for removable Micro SD card capable. It really makes things nice to have unlimited memory.

REI has (or had) the 60CSx for the same price as the eTrex Legend. While the eTrex is a wonderful GPS, it can't compare to the 60CSx. Easy no brainer if they are still the same price.

it looks to be the basic one (belongs to my brother) and he no longer wants/uses/needs it.

well if its the "yellow" one yes thats the basic model...I have been using the blue one "venture" for about 5 years now on both a motorcycle and jeep, I love it because it's very basic and easy to use for a clog like myself. It interfaces nice with topos and can make a good track to follow. But I have a Baja 540, and I am finding it to be worth every penny. But guess what i load as a backup Oh and if the price on that is free, then its a great gps!!!!

yes it is the yellow one. not free but $25.00. i figured it would be a good one to start with and see where I go from there.

It is worth 25 dollars. Play with it and see what features you wish you had then go from there. I have a garmin Nuvi for for the wife's car and love it for road trips but keep the ETrex Legend Cx in my Jeep. It's portable, handheld, battery powered or 12v, can use a windsheild mount if you need it. The X models have expandle memory with micro SD cards so I can keep topo and road maps in it. It does do turn by turn directions with a beep indicator but can be overwhelmed at times with the processor it has. I also like having a color screen. Great unit

I have been using the plain old Garmin yellow etrex for a couple years. It gets the job done and is fairly simple to use. A good starter unit. I just bought a cable to upload and download to it and it works fine.

I think I am going with the Magellan Crossover.

That eTrex was my first GPS. I still use it to this day, I carry it in my flight vest. You can check out all of Garmin's products on their website and their features. $25 isn't a bad price. That model is very basic, it pretty much will record your route and you can program points. At the min it tells you where you are and says the point you want to go to is that-away
