Garmin Nuvi

Just a note to (robert) and others. I picked up a nuvi 1450t a few weeks ago. While online, I learned that the FREE map update was only good for 60 days, from the time I first turned on the GPS. (It remembers.)

My learning curve is slow, and I've been using it only onroad, so have nothing to report on this topic. However, it is becoming a useful tool.

The "t" in the model number is for lifetime traffic alerts. In my first big freeway slowdown, at 10PM on a Saturday, I figured out, too late, that the red icon was a traffic alert. Oh, well, it did tell me how much I was to be delayed, and it was accurate. Also, your current speed reads in red when you've slipped a little over the limit. What did I ever do without it?

Hope this information helps. If you want to know more, ask away!

I'm still confused on how the tracking works on Nuvi's. Can you explain that a little more? Is it something that is easily worked with, How long can the tracks be? Can you start and stop them or is it just an automatic function? Do they restart everytime the nuvi shuts off? Its too bad the 5000 doesn't have a battery.

Is there a list of Nuvi models that run topo maps?

I have read that some models lock up when trying to load topo maps.

Anyone have any experience with the nuvi 3750 or nuvi 1490?

Looks like you can input lat/long and they will do breadcrumbs so that is good.

*EDIT* Found this on their site:

SupportFrequently Asked Questions« Get additional answers from Garmin
What is a trip log and how does it work on a nuvi or zumo device?
08/11/2010

Trip logs are points automatically stored when the GPS device is locked onto a satellite signal and moving. It is the electronic equivalent of laying down a "breadcrumb trail" to mark the path that has been traveled.

Your nuvi or zumo can store 10,000 points before it begins the process of archiving additional logs.* Beyond 10,000 points the device moves the oldest trip data into an internal archive file. Up to 20 archive files can be stored internally on the unit. This means, depending on space available, that the device can store over 200,000 points of trip data.

Note: Archived trip log information is not visible on the device itself, but can be used and seen with Garmin's MapSource product. You can open individual archives to view in MapSource by following the steps below:

Open the Garmin device drive located in My Computer. [Note: If using a Mac, the Garmin drive will be located on the Desktop.]
Open the Garmin folder.
Open the GPX folder.
Open the Archive folder.
Each archived GPX file can be opened in the MapSource program.

Note: While some Garmin devices such as the zumo come with the necessary mapping software to install MapSource, it will be necessary to purchase a Garmin mapping product in order to view an archived log from your device on your computer.

*The Archive file feature can be found on the following devices:

nuvi 500 series
nuvi 705 series
nuvi 800 series
nuvi 805 series
nuvi 12/13/14/1600 series
nuvi 3700 series
zumo 200/400/500/600 series

I just checked back on this thread. I did see where it's only good for 60 days so I still haven't cut the 500 or the 60CSx on. I figure I'll cut them on and update both of them when I get back in the US in a couple of days. Might as well stretch my maps out as long as possible since I haven't been able to use them.

I have a 255w and it works well for my uses, any and all of the little forest service roads here in NC have been on it so far

Well, I asked Mrs. Claus for the Nuvi 3750 since it comes with Navteq maps of Canada, the US and Mexico. This seems to be a point and shoot nav solution, very nice.

It also does breadcrumbs and you can maunually input lat/long and then hit "take me there"... it may not give you turn by turn off road but it will show you where you are trying to get to and where you've been - I tell you this feature sure would have been nice for the Expedition Trophy in 2006... gotta love evolving technology!

That Nuvi sounds awesome but it might come with Topos, so I would double check that.

Here are the specs from the Garmin:
What's in the Box:

* nüvi 3750
* Preloaded City Navigator® NT North America (U.S, Canada and Mexico)
* Vehicle suction cup mount with speaker¹
* Vehicle power cable
* USB cable
* Quick start manual

¹Notice Regarding Windshield Mounting Legal Restrictions

City Navigator has no topo info.

Wow, I just looked at Nuvi 3750 for the first time. Looks like a great unit. We'll need a lengthy report on your impressions no later than 15 Jan 2011.

Yes, you can definitely add maps they just cost money (unless you get them from gpsfiledepot, which are excellent by the way)

I've been checking out GPS File Depot to add maps to my nuvi 760. I made and saved two map sets in Map Source but can't seem to add both of them to the SD card in the nuvi. There's ample room on the card for both map sets but if I try to write more than one saved map it deletes the other one already on the card.
I've tried it with the SD card inserted directly in the laptop and in the nuvi.

Any ideas?

I have read that some models lock up when trying to load topo maps.

I sent a note to Garmin and got this response:

Dear Beau Johnston,
Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Pictures from nuvi 755T

Notes:
1. Limitations could be lack of detail of TOPO in comparison to Outdoor devices loaded with same mapping.
2. Does not have an "Off Road" option in the navigation settings to use with TOPO on i5, c300 and c500 devices.
3. Can only view TOPO on "North Up" or "Track Up" options in the mapping settings on 300 and 600 devices.

If you click the link in the quote, it will take you to the original email and show the pictures of the 755 in topo mode.

Based on this, we are looking at getting the 1490LMT, with lifetime map updates for North America.

So I tried doing this and it told me I needed to download Mapsource. I tried that then it canceled itself, saying that I needed a previous version first....so now I'm confused.

Anyone got any ideas?
