the tip over in the parking lot is funny -- what a moron. Inertia is a *****, though he's lucky the sides are flat or it would have ended up on the roof! With the passenger wheels on the ground he could have driven to the top. Most 4x4's would probably roll without the push before that point. The most serious pucker I think I ever experienced was when a group of 6 hummers went through Pritchett Canyon -- youtube/google that one if you haven't heard of it. Gnarly trail.

I gotta get my truck up and running again (been messing with the suspension) -- it needs dirt!

we wheeled pritchet canyon back in 09/06 IIRC and the AM general hummer team was testing out the miltary version of the alapha with a duramx in it. they broke the xfer case in 1/2 and one of the guys had to spend the night out there with the truck. we passed them as they were putting it back together. they had a civiv hard top filled with tools and 3 miltary test mules out there with the 24 bolt beadlocks etc.

gnarly trail for sure -- we were lucky that the only casualty was a broken halfshaft and some soiled drivers' seats. Of the 6 trucks 5 had at least a rear locker and 3 were running 38" tires instead of the stock 37" -- other than that they were all stock (one truck was all btm/no locker!). The winches got a work out. Some buggies behind us used us as anchor points to winch themselves :) . Seemed like every crazy obstacle we completed we'd come up to another one even more crazy. Looong day.

I don't think it's the cost, since I see literally dozens of G Wagens and other pricey hardware (Hiluxes with $50k+ of mods, etc.) roaming around Africa.

The biggest issue is there is essentially no AM General support overseas and maintenance issues like the hubs on the H1 freak people out.

The H1 is like a helicopter: if it's well maintained, it works great. But it's not meant to go 10,000 miles across Africa without service.

Meanwhile, when I was on the Uganda - South Sudan border and needed a fuel pump for an FJ Cruiser, Toyota of Gulu (Uganda) was able to get it in 24 hours. Try doing that with a Hummer part in this part of the world. A friend of mine just got a pretty obscure part for a 70 Series Landcruiser in Khartoum, Sudan... it took 48 hours. The supply chain and parts situation for Toyota and Land Rover (to a lesser extent, at least in East Africa) is just too good to pass up. I have no clue where I'd go for parts for an H1 if I needed them in Congo, Uganda, Rwanda, or any of the other places I typically am overlanding. Honestly, the USN/USMC mission resupply depot in Djibouti (south of Camp Lemonnier) is probably the closest source of parts for an H1, and they don't exactly have a retail parts desk. Heck, if you go 30 miles southeast from the depot, you're in Somaliland.

Containerized -- you just don't get it. That's why we travel in big groups so while others are sleeping we can steal parts we need off the other trucks! :)

You are correct in assuming it would be a bit more of a nuisance than a Toyota in most places, but carrying critical spares is a necessity in any vehicle when traveling long distance (let alone 10,000 miles across Africa!). Contrary to most people's opinions here, hummers/h1's are not hard at all to maintain, certainly no harder than other vehicles. As you say, a well maintained vehicle will just work. With neglect comes serious issues, and serious breakdowns. You specifically mentioned the hubs -- they are easy to service (the hardest part is removing the 160 lb tire/wheel!) and I have never heard of failures except in situations of long neglect (and using the wrong bearings to save a few bucks -- lets dirt and water in). I'd be more concerned with the computer issues over mechanical issues...those are the weird anomalies that rear their ugly head at the most inopportune times (and is responsible for nearly every tow, according to my mechanic). The GM 6.5 n/a is a good engine...and very prevalent (at least on this half of the planet)...the td version is not known to have the best electronics. Too bad AMG didn't go with the Steyr like they originally planned.

If I had it to do all over again I think I'd buy an earlier truck ('93, '94 or '95 non-turbo) to be as mechanical as possible, and bring a friend so I could do as I previously mentioned and steal parts when he wasn't looking!

RonB is dead on!!! I have taken my truck 18k miles with out being stranded! Plus we have the best vendors in the biz! These trucks were almost hand built, meaning they come apart and reassemble quite easily.

Go drink your hateraid somewhere else ...

Think'n with me dipstick!
I don't hate H1's, but would never own one myself. They are just too big for me, and honestly if I were going to spend the 50K on a truck, I would rather spend a majority of it upgrading it to fit my needs rather than all 50K on the truck itself.

I have always liked the H1's, don't get me wrong. Given the opportunity, I would love to drive one. I just would not own one out of personal preference. Would love to have an H3 though!

imho they are closer to a tractor than a truck so they are not for everyone. They are pretty wide and look massive, but aren't as big as most think. Here's a picture I have posted before, it's a nice comparison of an h1 next to an h3. I was also surprised that my passat was longer! You can really see the great approach/departure angles...and the resulting bad breakover :)

Eric/Redrover is funny! He owns several h1's and rebuilds and modifies his own stuff. He drives them all over the place and usually ends up saving someone's bacon along the way. He did mention mpg...which happens to be on par with other 4x4's btw (12 to 15). Not too shabby for a brick shaped tractor.
