H1 Hummer Wagons

Agree on the owners needing the training...as with many high performance vehicles...the vehicles capabilities typically far exceed the owner/drivers capabilities...! I will take a refresher course on operations and recovery on the H1 from Predator when I pick it up so I am working from refreshed knowledge vs. old brain cell memory!! The trip to Alaska sounds great! Enjoy and post some pic's!

THIS IS WHAT THE HUMMER IS ABOUT, look at the angle . AM GENERAL advertised hummer can handle 40 % side slope only for insurance reasons , but it actually can handle 45 + degree not % :) :)

( the truck in the picture has 2 inch body lift 2 inch spring lift, 4 inch taller tires, now you do the math what the stock hummer can do on the side slope :)

Predator seems to be the place to go for engine swaps. They have been dropping duramax engines into hummers/humvees for a while..they make some crazy claims of efficiency and speed, but they do a great job. I would go with a cummins and as manual/computer-less as possible for simplicity if I were to do a swap. Talk to the master mechanics and 80% to 90% of the time hummers are flatbedded in are for computer related issues. Everything else is easy to fix in the field...just carry standard spares like ball joints, idler/pitman, tie rod, belts, hoses and all will be fine unless you are getting a little crazy (then add some halfshafts to the list).

As far as being too wide for some trails...of course you will be for some, but not as many as you think (the body is 87" wide -- not including mirrors). There are hummer lines and jeep lines. It has an incredible side slope ability and is very stable, it will go anywhere it will fit. As far as economy, it's easy to get 15 mpg with a stock diesel (4 sp tranny/6.5 -- basically any one '95 or later) which is pretty good considering it's traveling on 37's, weighs 7500 lbs and is the shape of a brick. Most go up a few tire sizes and use aggressive tread so it really blows that away (I am on 39.5 iroks and probably get 11 now)

The hummer isn't the best at any one thing, but it is good at everything. One reason there aren't a lot around because they didn't make many, in 14 years they made under 12k. I doubt there are 8000 left on the roads here in the US. Parts aren't a problem as long as humvees exist. After that...?

Good point on the number of years and the number of units made! I never really thought about it that way. If I had wanted small and nimble I would have gone with a smaller vehicle...I wanted big and stable...so there is only one option...my old girl will treat me well and if the road is too narrow then we will just turn around in the ditch or on the side of the mountain...:wings:

remember one thing my friend, #1 reason of 4x4 accidents are roll overs , with the hummer that will be eliminated by at least 80%. hummer doesnt have to go around the things it can go over them, you can go true about 6 ft deep water with snorkel that many can only watch, u can push fully loaded 32 passenger tour bus up the hill. ( ask me how i know) :) that's 2 of 100 things it can do with no problem. its just one amazing 4x4, and yes you can get every part you need anytime, join the HML HUMMER NETWORK FORUM. and u can have whatever you want. the most knowledgeable hummers guys in the world are there .

u gonna love your hummer

the tip over in the parking lot is funny -- what a moron. Inertia is a *****, though he's lucky the sides are flat or it would have ended up on the roof! With the passenger wheels on the ground he could have driven to the top. Most 4x4's would probably roll without the push before that point. The most serious pucker I think I ever experienced was when a group of 6 hummers went through Pritchett Canyon -- youtube/google that one if you haven't heard of it. Gnarly trail.

I gotta get my truck up and running again (been messing with the suspension) -- it needs dirt!
