Ham Radio chat with the Continental Divide Expedition

Well there has been some interest in having a nighttime ham radio IRLP net so folks around the country/world can check in with us while we are on the Adventure.
Thanks to some great help from Shane4x4! My research shows that there are only a few nodes that are near the planned route….so here is our schedule and the node that is close to it…we will try to sign on each night we are near a node at 0200 am GMT, which should be around 8pm MT or our local time (add/subtract for your local time) and we will try to hit the Western Reflector node 9252, if that doesn’t work and you want to try to connect directly to our node please do so on the ½ hr mark after our attempt time.

Mon July 7th Cranbrook BC, node 1660
Tues July 8th Lakeside node 7430
Wed July 9th Rimini node 3060
Tues July 15th Kremmling maybe reach to 3984
Wed July 23rd Cuba node 3502
Fri July 25th Silver City node 3093
Sat July 26th Return Campout node 4754

I have no idea how this will work but if it does that would be pretty cool…basically we could chat with folks all over while we are on our trek. Yeah not a big deal using the internet from your home, but nifty when out remote.

cool. I've been bugging mike about this for the last few weeks. I thought it might be interesting to record them (I have the ability to do this) an then you could post them on your site or blogs. If interested let me know.

In addition I'd like to have you guys as a guest on the expo net on July 15th. Think that's possible? Maybe do that instead of the normal check in. I think people who can normal join the net would like that.

I was thinking I needed to figure when the next net would fall during our trip...
The 15th is a tough one as we are between repeaters but if means I can finally check in on a net I helped start and haven't been able to join forever then we will make sure we are there....even if it means driving into denver to do it :)

Since Mike & I are both hams that means we can have both radios running and my boys can join in also. So absolutely let us be on the Expo Net...
And it would be great if you could record the chats for future purposes....will you be able to catch us any of the other dates?

Sounds good. I just realized I'll be traveling on the 15th as well! I'll have to get with my navigator to find out where we'll be on that date. I think we may actually be in Ouray that night. So I'll have to check the area for repeaters, but yeah if I have to drive to find one nearby I don't mind. I just looked at the time any date that falls on mon/weds may be difficult for me to make, but if I can be there and record I will do so. Generally I'm not home until 8:30pm (arizona) on mon/wed.

Changed the first post to reflect days of the week...
on the IRLP.net site there is a google earth thing to look for repeaters...that is what I used.

I hope more of the ham's around here will join in...irlp is easy to learn & use so practice it once or twice before the 7th and chat with us on the trail.

Hey Lance!

If it works for you to get out to the Western Reflector on the 15th, we'll set that up as the Expo Net.

Mark, you're back! Hows the recovery going! I'm glad you're going to be around to do it since I don't think I'll be near a irlp node in CO.

Hey Josh!

The surgery went well, and I'm ahead of schedule on the the recovery/therapy end of things. Didn't feel like playing on the computer much - the pain pills tended to keep me kinda sleepy...

Later!

tried to hit you up a bit late tonight lance. Not sure if you made it up there, but I couldn't attend early this evening. I'll be online tomorrow on the reflector.
