Hello Miss FJ62. Flaco's dream.

General impression that I get is that the NV in a friend's EB is very truck-like. It's not an SM 420, but it isn't going to be mistaken for a passenger car trans either. The comments that I've seen about any of the Toyota H series trans is that they shift nicer than just about any other option in the U.S.

If you're going to go to the trouble I would not pass up the OD gear.

I really wanted to keep the A440 when doing the HZ-T swap, unfortunately all the doodads that make it extra beefy were getting the tag for the A440 up to around $5000, while the used H55/split case were about 1/3.. easy decision with the costs of the engine and turbo setup involved.

The A440 is an incredible trans. I did a lot of Moab in 2wd just with the control I got. Did McGrew in 2wd, and basically got to the point that I would test myself that way because I was able to point and shoot effortlessly over what I could do with manuals (the '79 40 had a 420/3spd case, the '81 BJ42 was stock but the 3B makes wheeling easy too).

The other benefit is you get a bigger OD over an H55, along with a doubler kind of effect in low range with the torque converter. All it ever needed was more power behind it so the truck could get out of its way. Lynchmob still wants to do an HZ/A440 swap and we had most of the pieces figured out (unless you got a combo already in place.. not sure if just 12H-Ts were setup for auto, it has been a while).

That all said, I love the H55 with the HZ. 1st gear for puttering around backcountry bush is simply awesome. It is a great combo, but both Kevin (wagongear) and I have lamented not having a taller 5th.. we could use an H66F, or maybe a Mark's gear OD in the high gear ($$$). 4.11s are the ideal with 33s so that isn't really changeable. The A440 would have been perfect had I the money to do it at the time.

I think it and the A442 are the most underappreciated fantastic Toyota products they have released. They just paired it with the wrong engine (in the US, heh). I have driven a 13b-t/A440 FJ62 and it was a total blast that put you back in your seat.

I have a small leak in my A440F somewhere. Even though the oil was within range on the dip stick adding a 1/2 quart this morning seemed to make a big difference instantly in terms of power and the light popping out of gear in the morning/when cold issue I've been having, so this weekend I am going to figure out where the leaks are and then do the Rodney (thanks for that link) and an oil change as well and hopefully stop them up. The good news is all that leaky oil has coated underneath pretty well so even more "rust protection" lol.. I am really growing to like the FJ62 and can't wait to clean it up a little more...

Hope it helps...

Mine seems to have plenty of power and boogies pretty well I think...

The NV4500 is a 3 speed with an overdrive and underdrive. You can start with the 1st gear (it is just barely doable/tolerable) but most of the time you find its totally unneeded. It is really nice when you have a load though. It was troublesome enough for me that I spent about $1000-$1500 more on my FJ55 build (which may be completed some day) to get an NV5600 which is a monsterous 450lb 6 speed from Dodge diesels that are basically a traditional 5 speed with an underdrive as well. But I would go back and say this was pretty excessive if I were to do it again, though it will be nice some day...

I had some pretty good leaks that I addressed a few weeks ago. I started by re-torquing the engine oil pan bolts. It definitely slowed the leakage and now I was able to confirm the pan gasket is leaking and not the rear main seal. I'll try to put the new pan gasket on this or next weekend.

While I was under there, I noticed the tranny looked a little damp. I reached for the pan bolts and all of them could be loosened by hand. I re-torqued them and have had no more leakage there.

There has been ~750 miles put on her since I tightened everything up with no more tranny fluid loss. Try that first.

Cheers,
Dave

Will do, thanks for that appreciated.. I figure it is probably something easy mostly likely first but I probably will swap out/flush the fluid regardless..

Scott's wife and I got the paper work squared away this morning, and i promptly drove it home. :smiley_drive: No issues really (aside from a grumpy auto transmission). I'm envious. What a great steal!!!!! Congrats scott!!!!
(NOW feel free to go crazy)

Yep yep! Thanks again Bones, for getting it for me. Now your old lady can come over and decide if she reallllly wants you to get one of these to fix up! haha.

My bosses didn't want to pay for a hotel room for JUST me this weekend... so they sent me home, go figure.... I just got back 5 minutes ago (10:20). She looks gorgeous in the driveway. Can't wait to start cleaning her up in the morning!!!!!!!

I've got the truck cleaned out and vacuumed really well. She's a beaut.

While I was at it, I put the Marty McFly wheels and 31s on the truck... they look alright. I'll put the stock wheels back on with 33s.
