HEMA Explorer North America

Another question:

Better to download a huge map or a smaller map focused on the area you will be visiting? How do you get the detail to remain sharp on the highest zoom in?

Glad you're trying the app out!

To download the GPX into the app, simply tap to open it and select 'open in' from the web browser, then choose Hema Explorer.
Better yet...hit up this page:
https://cloud.hemaexplorer.com/public/O9VMsMW8RnwWibBZpBpRc0gs//

and add the Alpine Loop to your profile in Hema Cloud, then it will sync automatically to your device.

I usually download USGS 7.5, USGS, and Thunderforest or Here Terrain for offline use, to zoom level 15 (which is 1:24,000 scale). If you go deeper on the zoom level, it can take up a LOT of storage on your device.

If i'm only doing one trail, I'll hit 'download maps for this track' to quickly get maps for just that track. If I want to explore an entire area, I'll do a larger bulk download.

Hope this helps :)

I just purchased this app for Android, despite the low rating and what I've read here, because I am hoping that it will be better in the long run than the other apps.

I was testing it last night, and recorded my trip home. It created the track, and I can view it in the app fine, but it won't let me export it. I tried through email and pushbullet, GPX and KML, and it either says "Permission denied for attachment" or "Unable to attach file. File size 0 bytes", depending on which app I try to export it with. Is this an issue with my phone, or a global issue with the app? It also won't create a share link of the route, and I don't see an option to upload it to the cloud. So at this point, I don't have a way of getting my track out of the app.

We got the app on day 1 and it prompted us to buy a cell enable iPad for GPS capability. I choose the iPad because my iPhone's capacity is used up by music and I wanted a bigger screen.

One thing I would like to see is the ability to have multiple devices (for track sharing) but be able to unselect sharing everything amongst the devices. Basically if I download a large map on the iPad it automatically wants to add it to my iPhone and I don't have the space. Unless I'm doing/assuming this incorrectly. I won't always have the iPad with and like to have some smaller area specific maps on my phone.

Also mine seems to be stuck on "Sync in progress". I have seen it say "Sync incomplete" but never anything else. I have left the iPad plugged in with the app open for hours hoping it would complete whatever its doing. I can add tracks on the computer and they show up on the app and vice-versa so it at least does that.

@KillerSloth

Were you able to get Imperial Units on the Android version? The only think I get is km/h and Meters. No inches, feet, miles.

Nope, can only get KM. They mentioned earlier in the thread that it was a known issue and will be fixed with the next update (not sure when that'll be).

Hmm...to sync the track to the cloud, make sure you have Sync with Cloud turned on in the app settings, that will at least get it into the cloud & you can export KML or GPX from there.

Can you take a screenshot of the error & e-mail it through the Contact Us feature in the app? That will help use troubleshoot the issue a little better. I haven't seen this problem with android.

Thanks for letting us know about the sync issue. Hopefully the next rev will get that (and several other bugs) figured out.

You should be able to go into the details area of any item on the device (track, route, waypoint, or map) and disable syncing. Then it should only stay on your device, if that's not working as expected, use the Contact us feature in the app to send an e-mail & open a ticket. Screenshots are always helpful :)

Thanks for the reply. I also need to make a correction. I can create items on the PC and they sync to the devices fine but not the other way....

When I go to the menu on my phone and click Maps under "My Data" I see all the maps that I have added to the iPad. If I click on a map it tells me the details and gives me the option to "Load in Main Map" and "Resume Download". Maybe I missed this or assumed that because it was constantly syncing that it was trying to download all the maps. Under "Waypoints" I get more options but nothing about disabling syncing to prevent tracks from making their way to the other devices. Under "Setting" I can turn off "Sync Data" or "Auto-Publish" but doesn't that affect all the Data as a whole? Thanks again.

I have the same problem, really fraustrating it will only sync from computer to iphone/ipad but not from a device to the computer. I have tried resetting my password, turning sync on and off, etc.

That's really odd. I have about 7 devices connected to various test accounts on both Android & iOS and the syncing seems to work pretty much OK. The only issue is that most times the iOS app says 'Sync Incomplete' when in fact the data is there.

Rest assured that our re-development of the cloud infrastructure will enhance (and fix) the syncing features.

So...this layer isn't approved for public release yet, but I thought a screenshot would be OK:

You're looking at the Hema Explorer app with a custom Ouray Area Trails / FJ Summit overlay. It shows pointers to all the major trails along with a difficulty rating, as well as the actual tracks, and a few POIs.

Layers like this are in the works, only from Hema =)

Maps are cool :)

I already own Gaia, but if more trail layers like the ones mentioned above are in the works, I'm definitely more interested in giving Hema a test drive. Looks like the app is on sale in the iOS App Store today, for $14.99 USD, so if you're considering buying it, now might be a good time.

Part of the long-term plan is to work with all the major events to create custom layers. The FJ Summit X layer is the first of many more to come. Also, a new version of the cloud is in the works...and of course app updates to make it all work better for the 4x4/overland market =)
