FTS800 Bus.......
Hi all,

I am a new user. I float between Canberra, Cape York and Darwin.

I am looking for a new 4wd. This is the one I have found so far which might suit my needs, although it is 44k Oz. Which I think maybe a little step.

It has the following

Rear diff limited slip.

Engine: 4 litre diesel.

56 kW at rear wheels dyno tested.

Wheels: 39x15x16.5 Super Swampers with 2 spares.

CAB:

Twin air con units

Tinted windows

All new interior lining with fabric protection

6 seater

CD radio player

Painted metallic Maroon Red with paint protection

8000lb high mount winch

Aluminium Bull Bar

Filter technology fuel and oil filtration systems

Wide Hino truck mirrors

Fluoro interior light

New Shocks and Steering Damper

Rally 4000 Spot lights

Aluminium sump guard

3” Donaldson air system with Highclones fitted

Stainless Steel exhaust and extractors

It had a super charger fitted, but removed as it was too noisy??

REAR CAMPER BODY:

Size 3000mm length x 2200mm width x 1500mm height

260 Litre aluminium fuel tank

150 Litre aluminium water tank

3x55 watt solar panels

2 x orbital gel deep cycle batteries

2000kg towbar with voltage reducer

LED tail lights and clearance lights

2x tool boxes built under the rear camper body

12 volt pressure pump with shower and tap outlet

Engel Fridge mount and plug only
Fluoro 12 volt lights mounted on lift up doors

Rust protection on chassis

Rear camper body all aluminium construction

Isolation switches fitted for truck and solar systems

5.5 x 3.5m attachable tarp awning that slides onto rear lift up door

I wouldve posted pictures in message, just dont know how

Hi Jack!

In the states that would be extremely underpriced. I don't know about Oz.

It's expensive to add all those "bells and whistles" already on the truck.

Don

It looks like a former bushfire truck.
My only concern is the load capacity of the tires. Those tires are rated at approx. 3200kg/axle which may be too low for the rear. Please correct me if I'm wrong; you may not need high load capacity unless you add living quarters in the rear, rather than use it just for storage and camp outside.
A higher load capacity tire would be Michelin 255/100R16 XZL (36.4" tall, 10" wide, 4240kg@5.75 bar/axle), 11.00R16 XZL (38.7", 11.3", 4360kg@5.5 bar), 325/85R16 XML (38.7", 12.9", 4600kg@4.5 bar). They are radials with all steel construction.

It was owned by the Australian Navy and was orginally white, The owner only used it for going camping and has done about 10,000kms in about 4 years.

I am not a expert on tyres, however I think the tyres would wear out fast. If I do buy it, I would change the tyres.

Cheers

Is it just me

the rear spares seem to be held on with double sided sticky tape.........

looks like a good base to work from, but I would have a knowledgable mate
to have a good long look at the engine and gearbox.

Extra power usually has a cost factor associated to it - engine longitivity

Hey, mate. Welcome to ExPo. If I lived in Canberra I'd want to float to Darwin and Cape York too. Haha. Sing out if you want a pic posting lesson or check in the admin section of ExPo.

Ditto on everything Charlie said about the tires. Surely you'll get busted at an inspection at some point. Looks pretty good for an oldie but obviously someone's thrown alot of money at it. Have you got any pics of the blower.

Oh, and BTW the 8000lb winch sounds a little light for a Canter and the rear LSD is standard. It's a 24volt one, heh?

I reckon if it's what you're looking for , then go for it. Imagine buying a crappy one for $25K and then spending another 20 on it. You still wouldn't have a truck as good as that.

Those tires look like Mickey Thompson "Baja Belted"'s, not Super Swampers. The M/T Baja's are apparently are no longer made. The next closest tire looks to be the "Baja Belted HP" which only comes in a 31-7.50 15 size. Years ago a friend had some of the Baja's on his fibreglas dune buggy and I was not impressed with their performance or their lifespan.

If the supercharger was a Roots type (GMC Jimmy "6-71" like the drag racers seem to prefer) I can well imagine that hours of listening to it would take a large toll.

Sorry dont have any details on the supercharger.

I could buy a plain jane 130 to 190kms 2001-2002 for around 25 to 30k.

I have had qoutes to make a canopy with a sleeper at the front, with access to the cab. Like a semi. Then rest of the canopy for storage etc. Price was around 11k.Real simple drawing below

Canter Canopy 1.jpg

Side view of rear canopy, top front door for sleeper cab access.

I think suspension would be around 5k for longer springs and mods. Which the one in the picture doesnt have.

Not sure on what wheels would cost

So for maybe another 10k to 15k of the buy price, I could have a later model truck.

Some sums to scare me

Truck 28k
Canopy 12k
Rear Aircon 4K
Winch 2K
Solar Panels 3k
Bull Bar 2k
Water Tanks etc 1k
SRW 5k
Suspension 5K

Total 62K???? But would have later model truck with 4.2 if that is a bonus. And also canopy to suit my needs

From a Canberra perspective you will want to consider:

- if you are registering it as a motorhome or a truck. That configuration would be classed as a truck. If it is to be registered in Canberra as a 5 tonne motorhome it will cost about $800 a year, but as a truck they will want lots more per year.

- if it is GVM 5 or 6 tonne or reduced to 4.5 tonne for cheaper rego and an ordinary drivers licence.

- if the wheel modifications have an engineers certificate valid in the state you plan to register it in, the Canberra rego people are extremely reluctant to accept engineers if they are not certified for Canberra or NSW by either of the rego authorities.

- and ditto on UK4X4 about engine life versus extra power

Seems you have the same model is the red one. I do like it just think it is a bit rich for a vehicle 16 years old.

It would stay rego`d in NT or QLD as I have addresses in both states

it is a bit rich for a vehicle 16 years old.

It requires patience and carefully studying of all the auction sites. In the current financial climate you should be able to do a lot better.

Check Pickles and Airport Auctions, and the other auction sites most have listings in the major newspapers.

I would not buy the red one on the basis that persons unknown have fitted a super charger, tinkered with the motor, and might have done things that have a long term impact.
It could be fine with no problems at all, but I would not want to risk being off road in a remote place and find out that some kid seeking more power two years earlier has stranded me in the middle of no where.

Patience does work, mine was a fully functional rural fire truck it had done 9000km and cost 18K in 2006. We are in denial and no longer publish the current cost. It is better to think of it as a hobby with on going costs, and to just be thankful it is not a boat.

I have started a new thread to see what people pay for rego!

93canter, that was a bargain.

I am hoping that I can play a little on the current economic crisis and get one cheaper.
