Hit a deer, elk or moose?

What: Western Grey Kangaroo (big Male bastard too)

Which Bumper: ARB Bull Bar with side bars and Sliders

Rig: 91 Toyota HJ-75

What happened. Nothing really. the bar did everything it was suposed to do including stoping the thing from going over the hood and into the wind screen. I would trust my life to ARB products. Add to that having it on one of the stoutest 4x4 chasis on the planet and we were good to go (although being a farm truck, we never really spent much time figuring out if he frame had been bent, and it didn't apear to have been).

Cheers

Sorry, it wasn't an FJ, and I did not hit the deer; the deer hit me! PA muzzleloader season! You can't see it in the pic but it left a nose print on my fender, then took out everything on the drivers side. Only a full exo could have prevented this carnage!

Up here we have militant suicide deer, who lay in wait along the roadside just iching to launch themselves into someones ride. Of all the vehicles I've ever owned, there's been only two that weren't deer struck. I hit two last year in the LJ, both centered on the bumper. I have a Smittybilt SRC bumper and both times the deer hit that bumber and squirted out the side of the jeep like a pack of ketchup. No damage to either jeep or bumper. This road we live on is notorious for deer strikes and is responcible for most of our deer strikes. A couple of years ago my stepbrother Tom was running late for the first day of deer season and was flying down our road in a section known as Rollercoaster hill. When he started down the crest into the "Dip" a car heading towards him hit a deer. The deer went airborne into the path of Tom's Ranger, impacting him above the front bumper and laid the whole front clip back into the cab. Neither he or the woman driving the car were hurt, fortunately. We got the call from Tom to go pick him up, so my Dad and I jumped into the '89 Dodge Cummins. Naturally, Dad was worried about Tom, so he was driving pretty hard down the road. I said something to the effect of "You better slow down or we're goin to ********** something too.", when a herd of deer jumped down unto the road. The old man didn't have time to hit the brakes so into them we plowed killing 2. We jumped out, cut the deer's throats, threw them in the back of the truck, inspected our tweeked bumper while looking for other damage (luckily there was none) and headed onward to help Tom. When we got there we towed Tom's truck and the lady's car into a friendly nieghbors driveway to await a tow truck. The woman's husband showed up and asked us if they could have the deer his wife hit. Imagine a sack of beans and jello, and you'd have a pretty good visual of the condition of that deer after hitting 2 vehicles. They threw that sack of jellified venison into thier truck and away they went. And we went home and skinned a couple of deer.

I have been very fortunate. I hit mostly smaller things like birds (crows hitting the ARB is messy), rabbits and porcupines (I was pulling quills for weeks). Here is the biggest one:

1. What you hit - Mountain Goat

2. What kind of bumper you have on your rig. - Stock

3. What kind of damage you sustained. - Small dent in the corner.

4. What kind of vehicle you're driving. - 1997 Nissan Pathfinder

The goat deflected like a hockey puck and ran off.

Ran over a deer.

I knocked a deer down and ran over him once.

Scared the poop out of me. I was driving a 1981 fj40 with a double tube bumper, doors and top off, at night. I look beside me as I see something out of the corner of my eye. A stupid deer is running along the side of me. I slow down and as he pulls just ahead of me, he takes a hard right, into my bumper. I knock him down, and ran over him. Spooked me because I got that wheel chock chirp as the tire was 'braked' for a second.

The deer got up and ran away, and I was missing one offroad light and the bumper prong (the unsupported part that protects the front of the tire) was bent in about an inch.

I checked the next day and didn't see any blood on the road. I even looked through the woods, thinking that if he was really hurt badly, he wouldn't get very far. No sign of him... just hair and bent metal!

...I'm planning on putting an ARB on. I'm sure, it would've been a much different outcome with one on.

Thanks guys, this is really good. I think I'll definitely bite the bullet and buy an ARB. I like the "look" of the Bent-up for the FJ Cruiser better, but it seems that the ARB is the most stoutly built specifically for large animal hits.

I Hit a Deer many years ago, It was in the New Forrest in the UK, I was driving a military Staff Car at the time. A Vauxhall Cavalier (About the same size as a four door Ford Escort)

Hit the poor creature doing about 70 mph. It totally wrote the car off. The frontal damage was not heavy, but it took out the passenger door Pillar. and ripped the roof half off.

Unfortunately An ARB would have looked somewhat daft on the front of a car. And it would probably have doubled its weight :)

Since then I have always been cautious in Deer country, Never relaxing too much behind the wheel at night, With a good set of roof Lights showing good road angle coverage. So have managed to avoid hitting quite a few. Prevention is always better than Cure.

I still Use an ARB or equivalent roo bar when possible just in case thou

Nothing so far...

With the roar of my tires, and the high pitched turbo sounding whistle of the exhaust after I removed the rear resonator can...everything just runs the other way.

About a month ago when driving around in the dark trying to get to a spot where I could connect to the ExPo Ham Net over IRLP I almost collided with a monsterous bull elk. Even in my Tacoma, I probably would have clipped it at the knees, and the body would have come crashing down & crushed my cab -- and I can't imagine what it's 8x8 or 10x10 antlers would have done!!

Thankfully I've never hit any big game, but if I did - I would hope it's a Coues whitetail deer since they're so tiny.

Not sure about other states, but in AZ if you call Game & Fish to come verify your road kill, you can keep the meat (with a big game salvage permit -- item 17-319). Good stuff...

I almost hit a Burro and a Cow in the Sierra Tarahumara ( Copper Canyon) on a sharp turn!

And that is the reason why I went with the ARB Front Bumper vs the Slee bumper!

I hit a Pennsylvania White Tail once in my CJ5. They aren't very big deer and there wasn't much damage. Very drivable. I had a fiberglass body, but fortunately, a steel hood and grille.

Hit a deer.
Driving a Chevy 3500 work truck. Slight lift.
Stock Bumper.
Just the grill was shattered and the hood was bent a bit.

The S.O.B. (Son of Bambi) was standing in the road at night just around a curve. No reflective clothing whatsoever! The fool. Well as soon as I see him I start to brake and drift to the @$$ end of the creature, which was also towards the upslope of the area and away from the cliffside drop to the river below. Figure the young buck would keep his original direction and we'd pass each other. But nooo. He turns and runs right into me. Would not have drifted towards the cliff, but still.
Thanks for the advice on the horn honking. And Nullifier, that was a reaaly gorey link. Thanks:D
