Hodakaguy's Ural Gear Up - Mods, Pics & Adventures.....

Dumped the 20w-50 out of the trans today and installed Redline Heavy Shockproof gear oil. The heavy shockproof protects from 75w-250 and has a viscosity of 75w-90.

The transmission is a lot happier with the Redline, both when cold and hot. Shifts are noticeably less "clunky", especially on down shifts. Being that the trans is non-syncronous, timing shifts is still important and I can quite often get "clicks" when shifting instead of "clunks".

Another side benefit is the oil is dark red and is very easy to see on the dipstick....nice!

Time for a decent shifter!......

I'm one of the few it seams that hates the Urals heal shifter, I find the heal shifter to be awkward at best and very un-ergonomic, it's located way to high and causes one to lift your foot off the peg and twist it a bit to engage the shifter with your heal. I can consistently get smoother/better up shifts by using my toe and timing shifts than when using my heal. The stock shifter has a sharp metal edge under the rubber pad and will tear up your riding boots over time if it's used to toe shift.....time for a change.

Here's the stock shifter unit, minus the rubber pad on the front portion that decided to part ways with the bike on the last ride lol.

I ordered up a 2-1/8" x 1" universal rubber shift tip from amazon....this should work nicely. Now on to modification.

With the shifter assembly off the bike the modifications can begin

Clamped in the vice, the Portaband makes quick work of removing the OEM tip.

Continued from above....

Next up I needed to change the angle of the remaining tab on the stock shifter...The vice and a giant crescent wrench made easy work of this task.

Metal painted and now Installing the new shift tip onto the shifter. I'll swap this nut out soon to a lock nut.

Adding a bit of grease to the shift splines.

And back on the bike. Now I have a comfortable toe shifter that won't tear up my boots :)

Big Bore Piston Upgrade!!

If I can just get it to fit think of the low end torque......although yes fuel mileage may suffer a tad :D

The power piston is out of a 1955 Ingersol Rand KVS Engine/Compressor. The engine is a single turbo natural gas fired V-6 unit that develops 1000hp at 330 rpm and drives two double acting integral compressors that are used to pump natural gas. This piston was changed out due to exceeding out of round specifications. Bare piston weights 400 lbs and the valves have a 1" stem.

The piston has two threaded holes in the dome of the piston used to remove the piston from the liner, I fabricated an adapter plate that bolts onto the piston using these holes and allows me to bolt the vice onto the plate.....Bam vice stand. The piston works great as it's heavy enough to hold the vice in place but easy to twist and "Walk" the assembly around the shop as needed.

Just your standard Chevy 350 :). The lifters are hydraulic and a single head weights about 700 lbs.
