Hi,
We are Martine (Mrs) and Robert. We have owned two Def 110 - both white.
The last one, late "Alistair" was bought late 2004. I fitted it and from June 2005 to January 2008 he was our home, car and travel companion. He took us from France to Arctic Europe to Eastern Europe to Middle East and to Australia.
In Australia we met a great LR community, got invited at the Bush Rover Restaurant (http://www.kookynet.net/95.html) and made lots of friends. If you ever go down under, don't miss the LR mob. They are fun, generous and good people !
Shipped from Sydney to Rotterdam in a container, Alistair arrived as a write-off. The container got dropped from several meters.
I don't want to discuss the shipping company insurance practices. Just explain why insurance costs around 12% of goods value: we were told that incidents happen around 12 times out of 100...
2008 was a horrendous year for other reasons but we made through it. To resume our world tour we did hope to fly in North America and buy a Forward Control. Remeber the 101 LR made a short run in the 70's ?
But unfortunately we could not find any. So we had to move away from the LR family, although we still feel we belong to it in our hearts.
We finally found a cab over, 4WD, diesel, manual shift, short wheel base (100") at an auction in Japan, won the bid through an agent, got is shipped and registered in July 09 in Canada, attached an old camper on the tray and rushed to explore the far North in the summer and fall.
We are now in San Francisco until March, working on improving our truck and the camper to resume our trip to Patagonia.
Is there any bar where the LR community meets around SF ? We'd love to drop in and to say hello, even if we don't have the priviledge to drive a Landy anymore... although we still have the reflex to wave to a passing Def or Disco !
Safe drive and 4WD fun ! :smiley_drive:
Robert and Martine
