Hi,

We are Martine (Mrs) and Robert. We have owned two Def 110 - both white.

The last one, late "Alistair" was bought late 2004. I fitted it and from June 2005 to January 2008 he was our home, car and travel companion. He took us from France to Arctic Europe to Eastern Europe to Middle East and to Australia.

In Australia we met a great LR community, got invited at the Bush Rover Restaurant (http://www.kookynet.net/95.html) and made lots of friends. If you ever go down under, don't miss the LR mob. They are fun, generous and good people !

Shipped from Sydney to Rotterdam in a container, Alistair arrived as a write-off. The container got dropped from several meters.

I don't want to discuss the shipping company insurance practices. Just explain why insurance costs around 12% of goods value: we were told that incidents happen around 12 times out of 100...

2008 was a horrendous year for other reasons but we made through it. To resume our world tour we did hope to fly in North America and buy a Forward Control. Remeber the 101 LR made a short run in the 70's ?

But unfortunately we could not find any. So we had to move away from the LR family, although we still feel we belong to it in our hearts.

We finally found a cab over, 4WD, diesel, manual shift, short wheel base (100") at an auction in Japan, won the bid through an agent, got is shipped and registered in July 09 in Canada, attached an old camper on the tray and rushed to explore the far North in the summer and fall.

We are now in San Francisco until March, working on improving our truck and the camper to resume our trip to Patagonia.

Is there any bar where the LR community meets around SF ? We'd love to drop in and to say hello, even if we don't have the priviledge to drive a Landy anymore... although we still have the reflex to wave to a passing Def or Disco !

Safe drive and 4WD fun ! :smiley_drive:

what exactly made it a write off, the bent axle housings? i'm assuming the motor/tranny/tcase mounts broke also? from the looks of it it could've been fixed

either way i'm sorry for your misfortune and good luck with your newer endeavors, even though it isn't a rover!

Robert/Martine,

Welcome here! I just came back to SF after a great adventure in Africa. I don't know of a specific bar for LR lovers in SF but there areseveral great places to meet people with similar interest...Zeitgeist comes to mind..

Also, we are planning a little get-together and it would be awesome if you can join us. I sent you a pm....

If you need any support, or a place to work on your truck in AZ, feel free to stop by the Overland Journal and Expeditions West office.

If you want to meet LR folk in the Bay Area, check out the Northern California Land Rover Club - NCLR.

Here's their web site: http://nclrclub.org/forum/content.php

I believe they have monthly gatherings...I"m sure they'd be glad to host you...

Also...if you need any mechanical assistance, the place most of the guys go is Cerrone's Automotive on El Camino Real in Redwood City, ask for Tony or Frank.

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks,

The pic doesnt show everything. Chassis warped... first container corner to hit the ground, see rear right tyre ? Blown up. Proorbably a 5+ meters drop ?

Enjoy yours as much as possible ! ;-)

Thanks,

We'd love to meet any forum members, in particular in SF area (would love to go further out in California but MUST absolutely change tires now and still try to figure out about rims... SRW is in scope too).

We stay near West Portal.

I would be happy to have that as scrap!:victory:

If it is just a chassis and axles, the work could be done for less than the value of the truck. A new galvy chassis is 4k US and axles are no more than a few hundred each for decent ones. It looks like the body survived fine.

Welcome to SF and California. I am new to Land Rovers, just bought my first, a 2001 Range Rover last month. Someday I would like to pickup a 110... I grew up around SF and am currently living in Sacramento. I am no expert, but the Northern California Land Rover Association is probably the tightest LR group in the area. I would also post in the CA-NV Regional ExPo chapter forum.

I am a newbie to expedition travel. Only done some moderate trails exploring Death Valley, Utah and a few trails in California. There are a few forum members in the Sacramento area as well. Most of the trails up here are in the foothills and will be covered with snow. Yosemite is beautiful in the winter though. If you get a chance, I would recommend a trip north along the coast to visit the redwood forest. They are spectacular.

Keep us posted if you are up in the Sacramento area. I will be down in SF this weekend for a wedding.

I looking forward to reading about your adventures... Safe travels!

There are alot of Rover folks in the SF bay area. There is an informal Land Rover get together tonight at Lane Splitter Pizza at 2033 San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley, CA - (510) 845-1652. The owner Daniel Rogers is a Land Rover enthusiast.

Im just outside of Auburn (95722) about 1.5-2 hrs away right off Interstate 80. If you are passing through or want a place to go to get away for a bit, you are more than welcome to camp out at our place. If you are interested in the California gold rush , the town of Coloma where it all started is near by.
