Was stressed where to mount a few items. Found a molle board for the rear spare tire. Great for the recovery boards and few more items.

Just did a cardboard 37" tire template to position the spare tire carrier plate in the correct position on the swing away tire carrier. Planning on a winch mounted above it.

Maybe the 12v winch should not be hard wired. Rather use a 12v extension cord directly to the truck battery when required.

Rear bumper is finished, ready to fabricate frame mounts.

Who knows how to hold the swing-away rear tire arm open so the wind does not blow it closed, unattended?

Maybe I use these

I think a latch would be better than a gas strut. But I don't know how often you will need to move it.

I envision it is open the whole time I'm at camp.

As access to the rear storage box is priority one. The storage box door is a table to work on in addition.

Update: I'm building a 60 wide 15 deep, slide out tray. For loading and unloading since the fold down door is 34 deep.

Well... I'm confused.
You asked a specific question about holding the swing-away rear tire arm open, then you show an image of the rear storage box.
Last time that I checked, these were not the same things.
What the....

Sorry I can't show the picture yet. As the swing-away spare tire carrier is welded to the rear bumper. The rear bumper is not mounted to the truck yet (fabrication of frame mounts yet to be done)

The rear bumper is mounted to the truck at a elevation to be one inch below the rear storage box door when down.

When the swing-away spare tire carrier is closed the rear storage box door is inaccessible. Due to the spare tire being of such a size to block this.

Therefore to access the rear storage box, the the swing-away spare tire carrier MUST be open.

Hence the discussion about holding the the swing-away spare tire carrier open. (when at camp)

Unless you have developed an extremely friction free pivot for the tire carrier, it's going to take a very strong breeze to move a +70kg load.
Having said that, a gas strut would work in that situation.

If it were me, I would plan for it, but not do anything until I had seen how it works in the real world.
If the tire does not sway when you have it swung out, then there is no problem to solve. :)

On a smaller scale I have my spare held open with gas struts.
They go weak over time.
Not strong enough when parked on any slight side hill.
Hard to close something that's already hard enough.
Get covered in grime which kills them fast.
I've gone through two sets in 8 years.
I would therefore recommend an alternative latch system. Even a pin.

Nice build BTW.
