Expedition Leader
tried a backup light mod today. using a 886 headlight bulb modified to fit the reverse lamp holder.
here is the idea,
well i tried dykes, broke the first one, one leg cut and the other got too much pressure from the cutting and the glass broke. used a dremel. worked much better.
my only issue is they get the tail light pretty hot, after ~5 mins the reverse section of the tail light was pretty warm. i like to use my rever lights for camp set up so this may be an issue for me. i dont want to melt the tail lights. they are a 50W bulb vs the 18W that came out.
Bulb comparason,
bulb removed from base,
all finished
passenger side has the 886 bulb.
here is the idea,
Some of the 2nd gen Tacoma guys have been running this mod for a while and it works - no issues, it's GTG. Idk if 4-Runners run the same bulb as taco but I would guess yes.
Get a couple 886 http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-886-BP-Halogen-Capsule/dp/B000BLNTPQ
Then cut it and solder on a dab to slightly increase size of legs to ensure good fitment.
I used a set of dyke's to cut, dropped a very small bead of solder on each leg (keep them separated - Do Not solder together) and slapped a bunch of dielec grease on the legs and slap them in. They are probably 3-4x's brighter than stock. Blow away those Chinese replacement led bulbs.
