Java's 4th gen Runner

tried a backup light mod today. using a 886 headlight bulb modified to fit the reverse lamp holder.

here is the idea,

Some of the 2nd gen Tacoma guys have been running this mod for a while and it works - no issues, it's GTG. Idk if 4-Runners run the same bulb as taco but I would guess yes.

Get a couple 886 http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-886-BP-Halogen-Capsule/dp/B000BLNTPQ

Then cut it and solder on a dab to slightly increase size of legs to ensure good fitment.

I used a set of dyke's to cut, dropped a very small bead of solder on each leg (keep them separated - Do Not solder together) and slapped a bunch of dielec grease on the legs and slap them in. They are probably 3-4x's brighter than stock. Blow away those Chinese replacement led bulbs.

well i tried dykes, broke the first one, one leg cut and the other got too much pressure from the cutting and the glass broke. used a dremel. worked much better.

my only issue is they get the tail light pretty hot, after ~5 mins the reverse section of the tail light was pretty warm. i like to use my rever lights for camp set up so this may be an issue for me. i dont want to melt the tail lights. they are a 50W bulb vs the 18W that came out.

Bulb comparason,

bulb removed from base,

all finished

passenger side has the 886 bulb.

Rack under the knife! All seams welded and rusty spots getting painted.

Built new mounts. The rack is only 1/8" off the roof now and is way stronger than the stock cross bars.

rola back on, nice and low with the new mounts i made.

How do you like the 4th Gen? I had a 3rd gen and now Im rolling a Cherokee and really wanting to go back to the 4runner. How is the power with the v6? Does your 4runner have the 5 speed transmission in it or the 4spd still? Runner is looking really good.

Its great! Mine is the 4sp. They went to the 5sp in 05 with the facelift. The v6 is pretty good for power. When its loaded and I'm pulling a trailer it down shifts a fair bit. I like the 4wd selectibility with the v6

Loving the 4th gens. I've got an '03 V6, LOVE IT! I'm going to have to check out where you ordered those switches, I bookmarked the website.

One question. What light setup is on the roof of this 4runner you posted? I love it!

That is Kevin, darkie1934, truck. Its a Perkins performance rack with lightforce 170 's he converted to HIDs. He has a build thread on toyota120 with lots more details.

Check out toyota120 for way too much 4 the Gen inspiration

Thanks! I used to cruise through toyota 120, but it was costing me too much money. (as does most of the forums of this nature) LOL.

I'm going to have to check into that reverse light you've got goin' on too!

Looking good Gabe! I like the light. Nice addition to your new rack.

Are you running a CB or 2M for comm? I just picked up a Yasseau 2800 and am trying to figure out the antennae.

The antenna you see is CB, the silver bracket on the rack is for an nmo for 144/440 antenna. I need a cable for the Ham head unit before I can finish the install tho.

There is a local store that has antennas, ABC communication on 15th ne. But be ready to have your ear talked off by the old Guy who owns the place.

I've seen that place. I was wondering about their limited hours and strange website!
They have good prices but kind of limited selection, but I got my 144/440 antenna and nmo and mount there. Pretty cheap. Also got my CB antenna there. Just know more or less what you want and dont let the guy go on a rant. He is ~80 and just kinda runs the store for fun.

Like the "snow picnic" setup. Nice weather last weekend! Tmrw looks good too. May try to mount the new ARB bullbar and OME 886 coils if I dare suddenly get "sick" and need to stay home to "rest".

4Runners looking good.
