Jeep interior compatibility

What wrangler interiors can be swapped? I have a line on a really cheap cj7 but being a person who enjoys a little bit of refinement I would like the earganomic interior of a tj. Are the bodys close enough to bolt up the interior from one to the other?

A really cheap CJ-7 is likely to need far more than an interior swap to make it a reliable driver.

The basic body sizes are the same, but nothing will be a direct bolt in, everything will need drilling, modification or fabrication.

Pretty sure a line on a cheap TJ would be your best bet, even if someone gave you the CJ-7 what you want is a serious undertaking. It would be easier to retro fit a CJ grill and YJ leafs to a TJ, check out @jscherb 's LJ with a CJ front end!

The cj has a bit of rust in the floor pan and a blown head gasket. I would be swaping in a built om617 and a 20 inch strech. In Colorado I would need a vehical older then the engine going in, there is a Mercedes 86 300d sitting at my freinds shop (rear end collision) so I would need a jeep built 85 of before.

Or a TJ with a CJ title and VIN plate :)

I put a YJ Wrangler dash & heater into a CJ-5 to get decent defrosters and better styling (a slow kick intermittent wiper motor & box went in when I changed to the Cherokee steering column); wasn't exactly easy, but not rocket science either (quite a bit of wire sorting, splicing and hole enlarging/egging), not a good first project, IMO.
Have put several custom dashes into rock buggies; pick a piece of aluminum plate cut to size, weld in supports and cut holes for gauges then wire... 'way easier.
thought about doing an early TJ dash into a CJ but, at the time, couldn't find a complete analog (early years of TJ) one in a color that I liked so I dropped the project... as I recall it looked do-able with some fabrication and trimming but it was too long ago to be certain now...

Enjoy!

I worked in a shop that built firetrucks. My job was wireing. I built a dash for my old 4runner and a dash panle for a split tank on a motorcycle. I'm guessing I would have to cut and use threaded inserts

please don't take this the wrong way but don't bite off more then you can chew , interior swapping will be the easiest part of your project . A good general rule for vehicle projects is the figure out what it will cost and how long it will take then double the budget and at least triple the time it will take , it's not uncommon to have to spend half a day quite often trying to track down a certain part . It sounds like a great plan just make sure you have really good welding skills and understanding of reinforcing so you don't end up with a unsafe rig .

Hopefully you have checked places like jeepforum for others experiences. What you have planned sounds like a total 1 off custom job/build.

I have seen stretches and om617 swaps but when I was looking I didn't find a dash swap like I was wanting. I would leave the gear shift as is and a aftermarket center console and overhead using a tj double din dash so that I could use a android head unit for navigation and entertainment. The reason I would strech the center is to make room for a 3 seat bench for daily driving but remove them for long distance.
