Larger tank for the XJ?

I put this in my stock tank awhile back.

Had me a little nervous. :D

Correction... 20.081 gallons. :D

I got busy...forgot and then I heard the little "ding" of the gas light. Closest station was...well lets just say I was sweating pretty bad when I got there.

does that mean your fuel pump actually sucked and liquified some of the varnish on the inside of your tank?

What I think it means is that they really aren't a 20 gallon tank. That is why the vent trick works. The tank is more like a 23 or 25 gallon tank.

Gas expands considerably and there has to be a safety area for it to expand into.

In fact you have to be very very careful doing that vent trick or you can end up pushing gas into the evap canister which will cost you lots of money.

Modified vent pipe

With a recent replacement of my fuel pump I opted for the modified vent pipe option. With the fuel gauge on Empty but without the warning light yet on I put in 22.2 gallons.

However, best to abide with the advise not to fill up this way and then park the vehicle as with a little rise in temp., fuel will flow out of you filler cap. :Wow1:

Thanks,

That's because you are thinking on the wrong end of the tank, John. The amount you aren't getting in is missing from the top, not the bottom. If the vent is down too low it just wont fill that upper space.

Logic... it often eludes me more than i care to admit.

Since were on the topic of Marcus' vent mod, how much needs to be burned off before allowing the vehicle to sit in the sun? 3 gallon or so sound realistic?
