Man, with a starting price close enough to $8k to not matter, I'd have to REALLY be desperate for one of those. It's twice the price I paid for my van.

Nope, no way, not me. I had a 7.3 F250, and my 8.1 Burb will flat walk away from it. All the torque, double the horsepower, 1000lbs lighter, for half the price.

But my 7.3 only got 13-14, empty or towing. The Burb does ten empty and 7 towing.

So worst case, towing, 100 miles is 7 gallons of diesel, 14 gallons of gas. But diesel is still 50% higher. At $2.25, that's $16 for diesel. $21 for gas at $1.50.

It'd take 180,000 miles to recoup the nine grand I saved on the Burb.

Even checking your local Cincinnati prices, Diesel is 1.95 and reg is 1.59

A difference of $8.61 for every 100 miles using your own mpg numbers.
To each his own, but to claim a 8.1 is BETTER than a 7.3 PSD because of the power it has it retarded.
Especially when it gets HALF the fuel mileage regardless of conditions.
And seeing that you think the 8.1 has

275 hp @ 2800 RPM
525 @ 1600 RPM
So in fact, it does NOT have all the torque of a similar vintage 7.3, nor does it have double the hp.
Looking at it another way... you get HALF the fuel mileage having just 17% more hp and 15% less torque.
Even checking your local Cincinnati prices, Diesel is 1.95 and reg is 1.59

His math is off on the 100 miles also. He said he gets 7mpg towing and then goes on to say if he tows a hundred miles that 7 gallons wrong!!!! that would be 7 gallons just driving that 100 miles where as towing that would be 100 miles at 7 mpg 14.28 gallons. twice what he quoted.

Yes, I exaggerated a bit. My 2000 F250 was 235/500, and I always saw 340/450 for the 8.1. So 90% of the torque, almost 50% more power. Either way, still more than enough to do what I need.

$0.08 per mile is still 112,000 miles to recoup the $9k difference, in a vehicle I drive a couple thousand miles a year.

My point wasn't that the 8.1 was better than the 7.3. But for my use, it's just about as good. And with the sudden demand of the diesel fad driving up prices on the limited supply of Ex's to ridiculous levels, my Burb was a MUCH better buy for me.
