license class and GVM

does anybody know the rule concerning license class and GVM.....

My FG has got 4495kg GVM on the compliance plate, which i assume makes it a car license to drive....can anybody confirm...?

It has, however been fitted with coachwork (not sure of its TARE) and upgraded suspension...

There is another figure for GCM?....what does this refer to...?

Thanks :)

G'day Billy,
There should be another plate on the vehicle somewhere (normally in the cab) for a conversion or second manufacturer,
The GCM is Gross Combined Mass, or weight of vehicle AND trailer combined.
Just make sure there are no upgrades on the GVM i.e.4495kg +
Anything over 4500kg GVM will require a Light Rigid or LR licence.

Billy are you sure there isn't a second Queensland Transport mod plate with the the upgraded GVM on it. Maybe I'm wrong cause I never worked on the old Noosa Coach buses but I would have thought your GVM would have been more like 6000kg.

The GCM is your Gross Combined Mass which means your truck and trailer cannot weigh more than.....

Engineer . Gidday. I must hane posted this at the same time. Haha.

BTW I only briefly met Barry when he dropped in his old bus but he seemed like a nice enough guy. I know Paul gets on well with him.

Hi there,
found the Qld transport blue plate....and yes....
5.7 ton GVM....
i want to de-rate it back to car license...
Tare is presently just over 4.5 but I have started to remove rooftop AC, plus seats etc....
Do i need to get a new mod plate for the lower GVM or can i disregard the mod plate which is fitted if i don't require the increased GVM and seating capacity?...
if i must get engineer certificate, any suggestions for Cairns (nth Qld) region...
thanks again....

I'm certain that you need another mod plate that supersedes the last one. Unless Engineer can suggest someone up your way, you could give my boss a call and he might be able to organize something over the phone.

If you're doing this to be able to drive on a car License why not go for your Light Rigid license instead. One of the guys from work is going for his first test tomorrow in Nambour. Less than $50 for the test and he hasn't had any lessons. They want $90 an hour for lessons or you can do a whole day course for about a weeks wages but he figured even if he fails tomorrow and has to do it again and again it will still be cheaper. I went for a drive with him in one of the motorhomes yesterday. He'll be fine.

If your after the cheaper rego fees under 4.5 ton, that's a different story. BTW If you want your partner / wife to be able to drive a Light Rigid as well, they'll only need a learners permit. A few guys do this without any issues.

Oh Yeah. How'd you fare after "Hamish"? The surf down here is big and looking pretty good but (don't know if you heard) there was a swamped tanker that got into trouble and spilt alot of oil and other toxic stuff which has now washed up on our beaches . Not happy Jan.

4500 kg and blood Alc of 0.05 has merit.

It is annoying as we often go out to dinner and think we could take the camper in case we drink too much and have a comfy bed, but you have to stay the night once you cross 0.02.

Or you can take the car drink to 0.05 and drive home.

Then if you do take the camper and have a real good night, you will probably still be over 0.02 in the morning anyway.

You need to call Lindsay Stone in Mt louisa (Townsville), he'll be able to hook you up, no problems. I'll get the number from work tomorrow and PM you.

Haha. My BAC has been 0.00 for over 20 years so I never even considered that. But cheap rego sure sounds worth it.
