I did this exact same thing. But I put the tray back and mounted my compressor on it. The tank was a custom triangular shaped contraption my friend built for me.

Its actually been very reliable. Mine was one of the early ones done. Has had the Gen I and 2 versions of the Gen II computer setup on it.
I had to replace 1 bag before coming out to CA. One of the front bags had a fitting start leaking and apparently I was lazy on the anti-sieze and the northeast winters had me mess up a few threads. Ordered up a new bag to replace that one. But, when I put that bag on I welded a nut on the spring pad to make install in the bag easier (PS front bag is a TJ is a PITA).
In a hurry, the welder fubared the threads a little and I didn't get the new bag wound down all the way.
About six months later I tore that bag because it was never able to sit on the mount correctly.
Got another bag, ran a tap through the nut I welded, spun the bag into place and all has been well.
The setup has been on for nearly 10 years now. Its been a good setup. We also build a 6" bagged XJ fully linked that just needs a few finishing touches.

Also, the reason I posted again. There is room to stash a smallish tank in the rear fenders of an LJ. I'm thinking passenger side. I've got some pics of this setup around somewhere that I need to go find.

Really? Ive seen sliders and bumpers used as airtanks for a while and havent seen anything saying that they explode. Im not saying that it dosent happen, Ive just never seen it. got any examples?

Bumper air tank danger?
Do you really think that this is so dangerous? It's not like we're talking about a SCUBA tank. I might be wrong, but I'm thinking that the pressure release from a mild steel bumper holding +/- a gallon of air at 125psi or so would be more like a very loud "Phfet" sound which in the event of a hard collision, would be the least of your problems. In fact, it might not even be herd over the noise of the other carnage simultaneously taking place.
For the record, I'm utilizing one of my rock rails as a tank. It's maximum pressure is dictated by the ARB's, so it's regulated 85-105psi. and I don't lose any sleep over the potential danger.

I've been cautioned many times (on the net) about doing this.
Unless you were running a very large or high pressure tank, I don't think that the risk is too great...

This is where I installed my Kilby tank. 1.75gal but on the LJ the 2.5
fits just fine

Just checked mine (the cover) the brand is Parker which is pretty common. Like the others though, I think I just got it from Kilby because it was easy. Should also be able to find it in places like MSC Direct and Grainger though if you happen to have an account or need/want it faster.
