Long Distance '85 Ranger Build

Trip report from going down to the MOORE expo a couple weeks ago.

I picked this up a year ago, going to take it on a maiden voyage this weekend.

We were thinking it would be nice to have something for longer trips with the Bronco, with a family everything runs out of room so fast. I managed to snag this for a good deal, its a 1965 Apache Silver Buffalo. I have the Skamper that will fit in either truck but it isn't super effective for family offroad trips or really offroading in general. Its also kind of a PITA to take in/out (well really the topper that is in its way is the bigger PITA but it is all once and the same project) Ranger is a 2 seater and my F-150 isn't really set up for offroading so really it isn't much of a solution. The Apache is light enough anything can pull it (guy I got it from pulled it to Canada twice with a Chevy Celebrity) Not the end-all for everything but I think once I get the road cover replaced it will be nice to have. Right now I have everything packed in it for a weekend aside from clothes and bedding, really takes the load off cramming everything in a vehicle... especially one gaining a second little passenger in a couple weeks. Very basic, basically just a tent on wheels. A big bed on each end and a booth/table that makes into a bed. No power, no plumbing... just lots of room.

The truck has had a 500CFM Edelbrock 1403 since I did the V8 swap 15 years ago. For the most part it runs great and gets pretty good mileage. The only time it has faltered offroad was in Kentucky on a heavy washboarded road when it was trying to load up. Off camber horror stories are always in the back of your mind, the thought of the boiler going out and losing power steering/power brakes when doing something technical isn't a fun thought. Plus last year I struggled with how to get it in the mountains, that trip fell through but it is still something I want to tackle.

I've done a lot of research, I have a set of intake manifolds off a 5.0 Explorer but that is a whole snowball with where to put an airfilter, fuel rails/injectors, harness etc. Not a super simple system to piece together.

Keeping a carb styled TBI system simplified the air filter issue, it could just stay where it has been since the truck was built 41 years ago, in the middle of the engine bay.

Drooled over Snipers and Fitech for years but they started out expensive and haven't gotten any cheaper.

I came across Aces, they are a newer company out of Tennesee, they have a very active internet presence. Uses GM consumables, talks to your phone etc.

Then they announced the Fusion with the computer mounted on the unit like the Sniper, I liked the sound of that. Also it can control the fuel pump, efans and adjust idle speed for the A/C which is really cool. It can also control the ignition but I kinda want to get it working as is so I am not trying to get the EFI to work as I try to set the timing and all that.

They had a pretty good Christmas sale going, the kit was cheaper than a new Edelbrock from Summit. It took awhile to get out but it did show up today.

Machine work looks nice

It has a progressive throttle. Kind of like my carb the fronts open first but they are more linked to the rears, having them both open opposite directions makes for a cool visual effect.

The wires that need attached to other things area all clearly marked

Has a baggie with the mounting gasket, I figured it would come with the air cleaner stud but I was mildly impressed it came with mounting studs. I don't think I need more of them but it was nice.

And another bag with a keychain, more stickers, small hardware, firewall grommet/mouse access hatch, and a USB adaptor.

So I am pretty excited about that, I still have a lot of parts to accumulate, I will basically need to replace the fuel pump and rebuild the fuel system for the higher fuel pressure.
