I think your making a good decision and I would purchase either if the price was right. Other than the head light design on the LX it's basically the same vehicle. Just focus on a few factors like miles and color and then go from there. Personally I like the white ones but that's just me.

Yeah miles and color will be the two deciding factors. I found a white 2000 with 128,000 miles in my area. Not bad miles and yes white would be my color of choice next would be silver and next would be dark grey. I like the 80 series as well but it would be hard to get financing for a 80 series even with good miles, the downside would be age. I doubt many banks or credit unions would finance a 80 series vs a 100 series. I love both styles a lot. But I think the 100 series will probably be easier to get with good miles and a loan for.

I looked long and hard for an 80, and realized they were all going to be old and beat in my price range. That's when I ended up at the Trooper.

Hundo's are great rigs, if you can find a gently driven, well maintained soccer-mom-mobile. My dad had one for a number of years, and LOVED that rig...

I have a 3rd Gen Montero Limited that I wouldnt part with for the world. Room in a mid size SUV was one of the biggest factors when we bought it. I didnt want a Tahoe or Suburban sized vehicle as I have a 2500HD crew cab with a cap and didnt need to duplicate it. We looked at FJs briefly, 4runners, LCs, Rovers(I will end with another Disco in the near future but thats just for me) Jeeps, Xterras, Pathfinders. I honestly hadnt even considered a Montero, didnt even know what they were until I saw one on a lot. For the money, quality, and capability it was a no brainer. I was concerned about it only having a V6, but that worry has long since blown away. It has more than enough power for the vehicle and anything youll need to tow with that size vehicle, small camper or our 20' boat. I pulled the boat from SC to Erie PA through the mountains with no problems whatsoever. Milage is decent, my wife averages 18, I average 16. Shes a little easier on the skinny pedal than I am. Visibility is outstanding, off road capability is as good as anything you have listed above (7 Dakar wins), on road it rides like a caddy. My Dad, the BMW junky, even commented on the quality of the fit and finish. Parts are easy to come by although we havent needed much more than maintenance items. Five adults fit comfortably, with two dogs in the back, plus third row seating when needed and seperate AC in the back. Which, splitting time between South Carolina and the Rio Grande Valley in TX, the dogs love in the summer. It has the locking diferential in the transfer case you can put in 4hi and run in AWD at highway speeds, or lock the transfer case and have reg 4hi and 4lo. Plus the traction control system is outstanding almost like having locking diffs in the axles. Not quite, but close. My wife who has been a Subaru Addict for decades has decided that if they do bring back the Montero in 2014/15 like the rumor says, she wants one of those instead of a new Outback. Maybe you shouldnt buy one. Ill probably end up buying another one and they are getting harder to find.

Just here...
Chevrolet Tahoe. Great gas mileage for the size. Runs on regular. Can tow just about anything. Motor choices. Great interior space. Lifts are out there from a couple inches to a full SAS. New enough to finance (since that is a factor for you). Good transmissions. Parts are cheap and available from just about an pick and pull salvage yard.

- Do not get a Commander. They are an ergonomic nightmare.
- Toyotas come with the Toyota Tax built in and will cost you WAY more than it should for what you get, plus parts are not cheap. The FJ Cruiser is like being in a submarine.
- The Montero and Trooper are good choices for what you get but parts do not seem as readily available.

Rust does a body good.
I really enjoy my Xterra. I'm very partial to Toyotas but their buy in cost is too high now days. I wouldn't hesitate to take either of my rigs out for a good beating but my 79 Hilux just can't fit the family and the dogs. Something to consider with a 100 landcruiser is repair costs. I run with a few and repairs are never cheap or easy. The full time 4wd also ensures you're replacing all four tires if you flat one. My club president highly recommends getting the road hazard warranty.
