Lucky 8’s Project P38

aluminum radiator

QUOTE: "I have been driving the P38 for the last week and just to say thank you the Rad overflow tab snapped off. It was probably for the best because that one had 150k on it and I would rather it fail at the MALL then in the woods. "

That is a common failure point on the P38's dreaded radiator. I decided to alleviate any further issues and got a custom aluminum radiator built with a metal nipple that will never break. The radiator also has increased cooling efficiency and after counting the rows, this one has 67 vs. the OEM at 58. The top and bottom brackets are also aluminum so I should get further cooling from them vs plastic. The radiator is a drop-in replacement and very high quality as you will see below.

I felt it was worth the extra money spent after I overheated on the Lippincott Grade in Death Valley last year. I also replaced my water pump, thermostat, viscous fan, and a few hoses while I was at it...

Here is a picture of the radiator and METAL nipple:

If you are interested, PM me and I can get you in touch with the fabricator.

I also can't live without a tailgate. Once you have one, you can't buy a truck without one. It is just soo functional.

Project update:

I am proud to announce that Eddie Prescott of Terrafirma has agreed to provide full support for my lunacy. (I knew those pictures from his Bachelor party would come in handy).

These are the parts he has promised to provide:

- 3 inch lift kits

- Front and rear bumpers

- Rock sliders

- Front skid plate

- Tank guard

And let’s not forget…

Yes a snorkel!

The lift kit should ship next week. All we need now is a new shop girl for the install videos.

WOW! He is setting you up big-time. :Wow1:

A snorkel! Really!! I have seen a few pieced-together kits, but nothing too elegant. I am very interested in what it looks like and how much. as well as the tank guard...

I just picked up a factory winch tray and Warn XD9000 lightly used winch. I can't wait to get it installed...

griffin makes it...
I will be buying this one , too...
I will just have them put larger outlet and inlet ports on...
easy piesy , since it's all custom...
but an awesome fabrication, and the exclusive vendor for them is very fast with support (if you should ever need any)

P38 project update.
We may have bitten off more than we can chew.

The 305/70/16 tires appear to be slightly larger than what the stock wheel wells will allow for. Either way we are going to give it our best effort.

Terrafirma has sent over a few suspension kits and the first set of prototype shock should be with us on Monday.

The next thing to do is the install and see where she sits.

Springs are still working great as well as my shocks. Amazing how i didn't have to buy some poser crap to feel cool and look cool. That's about the extent of your work. I guess working on a P38, you might actually have to make something, instead of bolting it on.

Expedition Portal's List of Cool Parts So I can Be Part of the Coolness:

  • Bloated Parts Budget
  • Roof Rack
    • Its just so cool, even though I'll never carry anything up there.
    • Where else would I mount my thousands of dollars of lights?
  • *HAM Radio
  • Electric Fridge
    • because my beer won't be as cool in a cooler with ice.
  • GPS because back East its easy to get lost on the 1 mile trail system.
  • Gotta be a Warn winch or I'm not going to be cool
  • Gotta get a TDI engine because the cost of the swap will never pay for itself, but its cool
  • 5 batteries because all my roof lights will suck out my juice.
  • 5' of lift because its cool
  • Gotta be Terrafirma because its cool and everyone else is doing it.
  • ARB Bumper's, because:
    • They are just so cool and Randy has one.
    • I wouldn't know how to use a welder if I tried.
  • Gotta get the special Lug Nuts to go with my Poser Steel wheels.
    • The aluminum ones will just blow up the second I take them on that dirt road I've been wanting to hit.
    • Now I can understand it if you have 18" wheels
  • Got my highlift jack, its strapped to my roof rack because I couldn't really used it on these plastic bumpers.
  • How many Pelican cases can I fit on my roof rack, so at least it looks like I use it?
  • Better get my ladder so I can get on my rack for my empty gas cans and empty pelican cases when I get off my expedition on that off road park.
  • I got my 5 jerry cans because that 1 mile trail and road trip will use up my 24 gallons of gas once I switch on all my Lights and Fridge
  • I got my laptop mounted to my dash, I'm cool now right?
  • We hit 1 mile today, I'm knackered lets deploy the roof top tent so I look cool. And then bust out the cooking stuff even though there's a McDonalds a mile away.
  • Don't forget the $1000 safari chairs either or the table.
  • If I don't get all this crap there is now way I can every use my vehicle off road. I'll never fit in, and I'll just die.

There is probably some other Elitist crap I forgot in here to be cool. I'm sure you can let me know. Besides, I haven't put almost 10000 miles on my vehicle in the last year of ownership. It hasn't even blown up because it doesn't have all the crap on it.

Apparently you know nothing about the case. Unless you plan on welding up the differential and the Viscous Coupler there is no way to lock up the transfercase. And if you do that, you'll throw it out of balance anyway. Good luck. But I'll refer you back to my list above about the lack of fabrication or welding skills.

And before you do anything, make sure you don't change out the transmission and forget to put some fluid back in it before you take it on a drive.

And if you do work on the transfercase, make sure you put ATF in it as well.

They both use Dextron III just so you know and don't confused. Would you like me to send you a PM about the Dextron so you don't forget again?

If you want to do something worthwhile, build a LT230 with a locking center diff, to fit in the P38 without having to swap out differentials. Build an adapter to clock the case for a RR. I might actually buy one of those.

I'm sure you'll follow this up with some sort of post about how you didn't mean it the way it came out, but you know, you seem like a ********. And I don't like dicks. theres plenty of mall crawler forums for you to go cry at, or better yet, just ********.

Justin - Im stoked to see this thing. Im wrestling with my D2 right now but your successes keep me moving forward, thanks bro.

Justin, why are you "forcing" such big tires on your build? Wouldn't you be just a well off using a 265/75/16? The 305s are ~1.3" taller and 2" wider than the 265's. I think you can lift the P38 to get some more height, and still retain a balance stock look with the 265/75s. It just seems those 305s will make it look "butchered." I don't know...guess we'll have to see what it looks like and how it works once you're done?

I'm not sure how you got the P38 on top of the pile of gravel, but if you drove it up, that is a testament to the P38s 4wd capability (VC tbox + TC) with those bald street tires.
