Mitsubishi Delica

1st post :safari-rig: :D

I've been lurking here for the past year. Thought I would finally post :lurk:

Getting it ready for a nice 6-10 month long exp (leaving next fall 09) from Vancouver to the southern tip of the continent if we can make it that far.

In stock mode with the LSD in the rear, it would keep up to my rigged XJ and I had to problems climbing up and down mountains here in BC.

These things are very capable off road rigs.

1992 Mitsubishi Delica (L300)
2.5 L 4D56T tiny turbo diesel
Seats 7 but the interior is coming out and cabinets/bed going in

Mods done so far :

2.5" lift / shocks
Superwinch manual hubs
Awning
Extended breathers / seal electricals
Onboard compressor
ARB diff locker on rear

Future mods :

ARB diff locker on front
Relocate A/C & cooler rads in the front
10.5k winch
Solid anchor points front/rear
Fresh water tank
Full length roof rack
camperize interior
WVO/extra long distance tank
Steel rear bumper/swing out carrier
Corner to corner roof rack / spot lights all around
Possible snorkel but not sure
Sliding windows on one side
Small flares

Comments/advice would be appreciated !

Jesse

I have a neighbor who has one of these here in Toronto. I don't know anything about them but have spent some time parked across the road looking over his. Very cool vehicle. Sounds like an inspired trip.

Welcome to ExPo!

Delica's are very capable. I had a chance to watch one take a route last year and I was quite impressed.

Tell us a bit more about your planned trip!

Not yet planned out.

Rough estimate driving along the western coast US - Baja - ferry over - down to the southern mex border - crossing over and from there we're not certain.

Have been browsing in a lot of forums and piecing together as much info as we can to do the trip safely while enjoying it.

We surf and will be doing as much as we can as well.

I'd like to bring a dog down with us as well.

My travels so far on this continent have been across Canada, northern BC, most of western US and Baja.

I'm 34, girlfriend is 25 and we're both seasoned travellers (air/foot).

Being diesel and the ability to run veg oil is a big plus. I'll have an onboard filtration system as well if we pick any up along the way.

Welcome to Expedition Portal.

What a great vehicle!

We had one here in town for a couple days last summer. I went over and looked at it, but was never able to meet the owners.

This will be a fun build to watch, keep us posted.

Thanks guys.

Looking forward to building it up.

Camperizing the interior will probably wait until winter so we can still use the 7 seater configuration.

We'll be planning a lot and listening/taking advice even more throughout the year.

Maryna named him 'Granola'. So far, the name sticks. :)

Very nice, I really like the Delicas! Welcome to expo. :smiley_drive: We'll have to meet up when you reach the central coast of CA. so my van can get jealous of yours. :)

What kind of suspension is on the front of those things and how do you lift them?

Lived on the island for a number of years in Nanaimo, Tofino and Victoria.

On the mainland (Vancouver) now.

Entire drivetrain is a Mitsubishi Montero Gen I (pre 89)
Leafs in the rear (2.5" shackles)
IFS on the front (1" ball joint spacers and Tbar reindex/crank)

Wow nice rig.

We'll keep you posted Jesse, as of this week we'll have the twin of your van in my driveway working on a third tank. If it can be done properly will have the new tank working together with the larger of the two existing tanks.

Who did your air locker install?

Cheers,
Kev

Sweet van. First saw them 20 or so years ago when I went to school in Japan. Been intrigued with them ever since.

We're down in Bellingham. Would love to go on some BC trails. My sheet metal is still street metal, but I don't mind the Northwest Pinstripping.

But the real question is; can you do stoppies in your van?:hehe: :hehe:

Great Van's
We had an older boxy one in Japan during the mid 90,s
Used it to camp and 4 wheel all over northern honshu. I built a sort of kitchen cabinet in the rear so all you had to do was lift the rear hatch and your kitchen was set up, stove, sink, coolers and all. And the rear hatch doubled as a rain awning.
It made a great expedition and exploration platform.

Good luck on your trip, sounds like fun.

Regards,

Jim
