Moab Disaster

I once heard this saying, "The difference between an ordeal and an adventure is your attitude."

I have often quoted this to individuals who I was leading on an off road adventure, especially some of the newbees when a slight change of weather or bumpiness of the road cause some complaining.

Since my most recent adventure/ordeal I've added another factor, that greatly influences the determination if what you are going through is an adventure or an ordeal, that factor is just how much pain you must go through during the event!

On November 18th I meet my daughter and son-in-law in Moab Utah for what is becoming an annual adventure. It turned out that both my Cherokee and my son-in-law's TJ were still in the shop going through some major modifications so it was decided to bring our ATV for some trail riding.

My ATV, an Can-am two seater 800 cc was brought thinking the longer wheel base would provide a better stability on the more difficult trails.

The day started out with a hike up Negro Bill's canyon and the later that afternoon Dale and I decided to get a few miles in before nightfall on the ATV's.

We had been out for about 30 minutes when disaster struck, I had decided to try the Hell's Gate obstacle. My prior experience on this trail had been in my Cherokee, the dynamics of the trail in an ATV are different and one should always use their winch cable or a strap as a safety measure in a extreme steep section.

Unfortunately, it only takes a few foolish choices to set in motion a disaster. The 700 lb ATV ended up flipping over and landing on top of me, fortunately the v-notch I fell back into prevented me form being crushed and killed instantly, however I still suffer 4 pelvic fractures and usher in a new kind of adventure for my whole family that included 3 air lifts and a 3 week stay in the hospital. In addition, in a few more weeks I get to learn how to walk all over again!

You can read more details about it at:

I'm currently in week 5 of my recovery and am at home, the ATV has already been repaired and is sitting at my home along with my Cherokee waiting for my next adventure once this operator is functioning again!

I'm grateful to be alive and still among the land of the explorers.
Thanks,

Fred

Wow. I never would have tried that on an ATV so kudos to you for being brave enough to try that. I am sorry to hear about the end result of that though. Hopefully you recover sooner than later. Stay strong.

Welcome to post elsewhere

Bad Campany ( what a call sigh?!)

Your welcome to link to another site, if you don't mind me asking could you send me a link?

Thanks to all the well wishers. Week 5, which is where I am has turned a corner and I'm starting to feel OK without 24 hour pain meds. Some of my normal body functions are starting to come out of the trama and I can walk with my walker to the lounge chair in the living room. ( by the way I told my wife I would never make fun of a walker again!) I also gained back 4 of the 30 lbs I lost!

Thanks,
Fred

here's to speedy recovery!

this is a good wake up call to the solo travelers..

Do you think you would have attempted something like this if you were alone with the ATV?
