Moab, Land Rover Rally (9/27-30)

I had a great time at the event, and it was nice to hang out with Ted and others at the BBQ (thanks Ted!)

This was one of the top events I have attended from a "quality" perspective. Great people, well organized and good trail manners by all.

I have over 800 images from this event, and here is one of my favorites.

Nice shot! The 110 did a lot of sideslope activity this past week, and it is more stable than I imagined possible!

Great thanks to Ted for dinner! That was really cool. Some random shots from the event:

A couple of really cool overland Defenders, one from France and one from Germany. Cool group of 110s. The 4 tonne french 110 on 7 Mile Rim's 23 degree sideslope. That's scary!! Scott B testing out the performance of the **************' 110. And the last is a stock LR3 going up White Nuckle.

Are you sure that is White Knuckle? It looks more like Wipe Out hill.....

edit*** After looking closer at the other pictures, I am sure it is wipe out hill.....2/3 of the way into 7 mile rim. White Knuckle hill is in Pritchett canyon....probably not the place you would want to take the **************' 110 (truth be told, I would think twice before taking my jeep back there....).

White Knuckle is actually on the Behind the Rocks Trail. I went down it a few days before the HITR run. My friends had to twist my arm. I wish we had some decent pics but we all had our hands full with spotting. We tied two straps to each rig's rear bumper to keep them from standing up on their noses. Scary stuff!

Not sure how to describe it. It's a part of the 24 Hours course (this shot is from our 2004 pre ride of the course). We call it Nose Dive Hill because bikes ride the trail backwards of the way most (all?) people drive the trail, so it's a descent on a bike and a climb in a truck.

I had a blast at the Rally! Graham, it was nice to meet you and Connie and to check out your 110. I really liked that French 110 as well. I spoke with the owners a bit - they are driving through to South America - what an experience!

I only have a few shots - but a nice avi file of the Series climbing the Launch Pad - that was fantastic!

Thanks for the pics, Dave. From the map I was following I believe those obstacles to be High Dive and Upchuck. They were a cake walk compared to White Knuckle. The obstacles you've pictured can be easily bypassed. White Knuckle has no bypass.

Yeah, those names sound familiar. I have to take issue about being a cake walk, having broken a finger trying to find a line. None the less, I checked my guide book when I got home tonight and it says White Knuckle Hill is accessed via Pritchett Canyon. So I'm just confused now.

Last year there was a knucklehead driving the trail during the race who tried to find a bypass around Nose Dive/High Dive/Upchuck and got the BLM guy mad. The gov'ment man said there is no legal bypass to this obstacle, but it could have easily been just that the fella was being quite belligerent about driving right through a really obvious event and irritating the BLM rep.

I really didn't want to continue off topic, but I want to address Dave's concern.

I think some of the confusion comes from me speaking from the 4wd perspective and you speaking from the biking perspective. The "Behind the Rocks" trail seems to traditionally be driven by trucks starting from Hwy 191 south of Moab. The last major obstacle of this trail is White Knuckle and it is indeed in the vicinity of the top of Pritchett Canyon.

If I remember correctly, every major obstacle except White Knuckle on the BTR trail had a bypass. I'm pretty confident there was a split in the trail just prior with the route to the main obstacles labeled by name. I must assume that the alternate trail at this fork would bypass said obstacles.

I didn't mean to downplay those hills by calling them a cakewalk. I was trying to emphasis what a crazy hill White Knuckle has become. Sorry for all the confusion I caused!

Yeah, Pritchett ends right in Behind the Rocks. You can run them back to back if Pritchett isn't enough of a challenge!
