I have a 94 toyota SR5 with the 3.0. It has 190,000 clicks on it but still very tight. it has had the factory recall head gasket replaced. It runs great but is short on HP! I am planning on putting a slide in camper on the truck so i need more power. are there and mods to this engine that will give it any significant increase in HP other than tuned exhaust or K&N. Could i fit a newer 3.4 engine in it? Is there any options or should i just get a newer Toy! Thanks for any suggestions. BB

Don't waste your money on the 3.0. It will never make the power a stock 3.4 makes.
Anything will fit in anything with enough money thrown at it.
The 3.4 is a great motor and it will fit in the bay. If you are paying to have this done it is in no way worth it financially. If you are doing the work yourself then you can do it for under $2k...About what you should expect to rebuild your engine.
The reality is you can sell your truck for about $3-3.5 even doing the swap yourself you are looking about $2k. So you would have about $5k you could buy a little newer truck with if you do the math.
The decision will have to be of the heart because it makes no sense to do it financially. Something’s to figure is if you have already started doing mods then it may make more financial sense but if its stock...heck buy up with a E-locker.
Now that said..I bought a 86 4Runner for $1400 with tired motor and tranny...rebuilt it stem to stern and now have about $3500 in it I will never get back. I just really like the truck.

He swapped a 98 4cyl into a 80 truck and it was one of the cleanest swaps you will ever see. It looks factory. Very detailed post of the process step by step. While its not exactly what you are wanting to do It will give you an idea of what it will take to do if you have to deal with Gastpo Emissions people. In GA they don't lift the hood so it would be no big deal..Cali....Ohh boy you have to jump through hoops!

Barry, even though your engine is still good, that 3.0 is possibly the one engine in Toyota's history with a less than stellar record for durability. Adding to its work load now by stuffing more air/fuel in it might not help.
On the other hand, I know of quite a few successful transplants of the 3.4 into your chassis. It would cost a lot, but the entire vehicle would get a new lease on life with 25 percent more power and at least the same gas mileage you're getting now.
You'd have to figure the transplant cost against what a simple trade up to a newer truck would run, but if your truck is otherwise set up the way you like it's worth considering.

it depends on how tied to your truck you are. the easy route is to upgrade to a new truck. If you are paying someone to do the swap to a 3.4 there is no cheap way!
I also feel an engine swap is never as reliable as a stock engine. so on long trips it may be hard to diagnose a problem.
If you decide on an engine swap do your homework. for the same or cheaper costs of a 3.4 you could swap in a 4.3 chev V6 and have WAY more power! Very reliable motor as well.

Barry it really depends on who is doing the work for a 3.4 swap. You could do it yourself for around $2500 in parts if you have the skills or pay a competant shop $7000.
If the truck is basically stock now, I would walk away from it and get a newer Tacoma equipped with the 3.4v6 and save yourself the headache.
