Opinions on this 3-door '99 V6 3500 GDI?

It intrigued me at first, but after reading up on the GDI, I was put off.

My favorite car ever was a 3-door '88 Montero that I bought from salvage at 20,000 miles, and then drove problem free for 11 years after some bodywork. Now that I'm thinking again of an adventure vehicle, my first thought is a used Montero/RHD Pajero.

Are there any positive opinions on the 3500 GDI?

I'm not in a rush, so is there any model/year/engine I should be looking for? I'm open to RHD, and the JDM market here in Vancouver seems particularly robust, so I could wait for something on auction. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
